- The story is charming, fun, and full of hidden depth at times with characters who can’t help but grow on you and an enjoyable relationship building system. It’s a shame that the action RPG elements are so simple and threadbare comparatively, but I’d still recommend the title to both Summon Night 5 fans and visual novel lovers in particular given how easy even the action RPG parts are to pick up.
Audra Bowling · Feb 20, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Maglam Lord has a lot of potential, but you'll need to stick it out and try to squeeze some joy from its repetitive combat system and stale dungeon design. Along with its writing, an excellently drawn cast of characters — who can be recruited and romanced through the dating mechanic — offer shining moments in an otherwise unremarkable action-JRPG. The potential is certainly there for something special, and the game's visual cues for possible results of dialogue options removes much of the guesswork common in other games, but the execution falls flat in the combat department and holds back the enjoyable visual novel elements of this package from being as good as they could be.
Trent Cannon · Feb 09, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Despite any personal enjoyment, however, I can’t help but feel as though it’s ultimately a very middling game. While Maglam Lord does have some decent high points in terms of its story and setup, its bland level design, repetitive combat, and compressed crafting system weigh it down to an unfortunate degree.
Kenny McKee · Feb 05, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Maglam Lord is an imperfect, tarnished hidden gem that will excite fans of niche entertainment, but do it at a discounted price.
FerniWrites · Feb 05, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Maglam Lord uniquely combines an action role-playing game with heavy visual novel and dating sim elements to create an experience that stands out from the JRPG crowd. While the action combat portions of the game are underwhelming and the graphics are outdated, the beautiful art direction, engaging narrative, and excellent cast markedly make up for it.
Henry Yu · Feb 04, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The story segments are mildly amusing, as well as a few of the characters, but the plot goes nowhere fast, and the rest of the game is hard to enjoy. Combat oscillates between two second stomps to five minute plus long slogs, all the while being far more boring than it might look. The entire other 'half' beyond the visual novel segments is laughably bad in the design and the game does little to separate itself from either better or more unique JRPGs currently out.
Eric Ace · Jun 21, 2022 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Underwhelming in all aspects outside of the story and characters, Maglam Lord isn’t a game that will have you hooked from beginning to end, but there is enough here in its narrative for those looking for something a bit more light-hearted.
Mike "MickSave" Crewe · Feb 16, 2022 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The graphical style of these action sequences doesn't help, either. In its visual novel form, Maglam Lord looks lovely, with cool character art and nicely drawn backdrops. But when you're dunked into a dungeon, you're assaulted with ugly 3D assets — the kind you'd expect from a low budget mobile title. It's a real shame that there's such a gulf in quality.
Robert Ramsey · Feb 04, 2022 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Maglam Lord combines a handful of genres into one package, and does it well enough to make it at least fun. However, it's the kind of fun that comes from mindlessly consuming something with little resistance. Maglam Lord works well as an in-between game, but it cannot hold up against other titles that specialize in the genres that this game combines.
Timothy Nunes · Feb 04, 2022 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Ultimately, Maglam Lord has an interesting story and its character designs will be sure to draw in your attention and yet, it also features a repetitive slog of battles, collecting and grinding between the actual fun parts of the game. If there was an option to only view the story or lower the difficulty to breeze through the combat, I might have been a little bit more favourable but as it stands, I just found myself mindlessly working at requests. However if you do enjoy this kind of gameplay loop, you can find a genuinely engaging story with charming characters who’ll surely put a smile on your face.
