  • When Mafia III does falter, it's where it most willingly gives in to those open-world conventions, resting back on the kinds of activities and mechanics we've seen done time and time again in games just like this. It's not unfair to want Mafia III to be better than it is, but I think it's still worth admiring for what it manages to pull off.

  • Unfortunately though, Mafia III is plagued with head-scratching design decisions like having no fast travel options, a repetitive missions structure and very little to do in the world that doesn’t involve killing bad guys. Compounded by the litany of technical issues, Mafia III seems like a game that could have used a lot more time in development but man, that soundtrack really is stellar.

  • Games are expensive, and the modern gamer is often extremely wary of where to invest their time and earnings. However as gamer’s we shouldn’t allow quantity to overpower quality.

  • Ultimately though, even the strongest of stories can't save Mafia III from falling prey to genre conventions, and too many at that. It never quite lives up to the ambitions Hangar 13 had, and it's a shame it's such a chore to actually witness Lincoln's story.

  • Like the era it paints, Mafia III feels like a relic. It's dated, has obvious flaws, and doesn't hold up particularly well when compared to a lot of modern works. Most damning, it's rarely in tune with itself, often contradicting itself in big ways. It's tough to not feel like Lincoln Clay deserved better than this.

  • The worst that can be said of Mafia III is that it’s tolerable. This is also the best that can be said. A perfectly sufficient game that does nothing unique with a unique setting, providing instead hours upon hours of predictable, uniform material. Likeable enough, but nowhere near as gripping as it should have been.

  • The story of Lincoln Clay is a memorable epic tale of revenge. But Mafia III is flawed because of its failure to deliver the basic fun gameplay of an open world, based on the quality bar set by titles like Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto V from sister company Rockstar Games at Take-Two Interactive. You have to forgive a lot in order to appreciate the movie-quality story.

  • A game of inspired highs diluted with pedestrian lows. Worthy, but achieves less than its true potential.

Mafia III is one of the best stories in a video game I have played this year, heck I would go as far as to say this generation. It is wrapped around some pretty standard and repetitive open world game design though, which does do it a disservice. Still, the locales and world resonate with me, and the story kept me coming back for more, and that speaks volumes. This game will certainly be on my mind when it comes time to discuss the best of 2016, and I think it is more than worth looking past its blemishes to check it out.

  • All in all, Mafia III is a good game. While there are some glaring issues with regards to glitches and game crashes, they do not take too much away from the experience. Some of these issues can be addressed with post-release patches, and we hope that the story expansions provide more mission variety. That being said, Mafia III’s compelling story and combat really shine through, and it is simply a fun game.

About the game

It’s 1968 and the rules have changed. After years in Vietnam, Lincoln Clay knows this truth: Family isn’t who you’re born with, it’s who you die for. Now back home, in a reimagined New Orleans, Lincoln is set on rebuilding his life, but old ties keep him from leaving the city. It will take more than a few friends to make it in this new world. Intense gun fights, visceral hand-to-hand combat, white knuckle driving and street smarts will all be needed. But with the right crew, tough decisions and some dirty hands, it’s possible to make it to the top of the city's underworld. It’s time to create a new family.
