- Overall, Mafia II is a very fun game to play with a fantastic story, presentation, and graphics. There are a few issues that hold the game back from being a real contender such as the lack of gameplay variety and the linear story. When all is said and done, Mafia II is a memorable gangster title that entertains for a short while but comes just short of offering a true next-generation open-world experience.
Adam Wolfe · Sep 01, 2010 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Mafia II is the videogame equivalent of sitting on the couch, clutching a gallon bottle of wine and watching an entire season of Mad Men on DVD. It is not for the casual player, or those who prefer their story left in the manual. Fans of the original game will enjoy the updates and modernizations to the sequel, as will mature gamers looking for a taste of something more compelling than your average shooter.
Russ Pitts · Aug 31, 2010 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Mafia II doesn't make the best use of its open-world environment. While the game's fictional setting is brimming with personality, there's very little interaction within it. Instead, the game opts to lean on atmosphere and characterisation. And while it's enough to leave some stunning first-impressions, the charm does begin to wane as the campaign nears its conclusion, making Mafia II a bit of a missed opportunity.
Sammy Barker · Aug 30, 2010 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Mafia II delivers a rich slice of 50's mob culture with phenomenal atmosphere and solid gameplay that's easily worth experiencing. But if you're expecting the generous breadth of the best open-world games, the absence of extracurricular activities will be a bit of a disappointment. It doesn't quite stand above the luminaries that inspire it, but if you're looking for an excellently-realized shooter that sticks straight to its target, Mafia II is worth a shot.
Game Trailers · Aug 25, 2010 Reviewed on X360 - Mafia 2 feels like a game that could have been great. Clunky controls are hardly game-breaking, and some might argue part and parcel with the open-world genre, but without the features associated with open-world games Mafia 2 is more easily compared to Uncharted and Gears of War - and in that circle it's simply not action-packed enough. Vito's rise might not be as littered with flashy set-pieces as I'd have liked, but by the end it's a journey most people won't begrudge making.
Tom Orry · Aug 25, 2010 Reviewed on PC, PS3, X360Read full review - It’s fun, but it feels artificial and weirdly out of place, and has limited uses at best. Sometimes it’s mandated by the story, but you can also start a fistfight in the middle of a firefight, which will usually get you plugged. Either way, fistfights are always fought one-on-one while the others wait their turn, like in a kung-fu movie.
Mikel Reparaz · Aug 24, 2010 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - Though Mafia II was initially viewed as a game to rival open world games like Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto, in reality, it is a game that is all about a linear, plot-driven, single-player experience - with a lot of open world driving. If you are not a fan of this type of gameplay experience, Mafia II will not be an enjoyable title for you. However, if you like games that take the time to present you with a detailed story that is told in a very rigid sequence, this title will certainly be worth your time.
Amanda L. Kondolojy · Aug 24, 2010 Reviewed on PC, PS3, X360Read full review - Even supported by a neat script and great voicework, Mafia II is treading ground already chewed up by cinema's very best. On that level, it can't compete. On the level it can – that of the gorgeous Empire Bay – it shows an unwillingness to try. It's a compelling experience, but an offer you can refuse.
Rich McCormick · Aug 24, 2010 Reviewed on PCRead full review - After the 15-or-so hours it might take you to gun through Vito's story, it's hard not to come away with the sense that there should have been more to do in this beautiful city. Yet while you might be disappointed with what Mafia II doesn't do, it's hard to be disappointed by what this excellent game does do: deliver fun shoot-outs and pockets of shocking brutality in a world you're delighted to be a part of.
Kevin VanOrd · Aug 23, 2010 Reviewed on PC, PS3, X360Read full review - I loved the setting enough that I can't tell you to avoid Mafia 2 and feel good about it, and my score reflects that. While there's not much to crow about here in terms of story or action, there were moments when the city and the music all gelled together that were downright transportive, and it'd be a shame to miss out on them.
