- As a PC port Lightning Returns is pretty barebones, but it’s still going to be the best version of this game out there. On my 970 I ran it at 1080//60fps without any hitches, so it’s definitely serviceable enough.
Joffy S · Jan 23, 2016 Reviewed on PCRead full review - For the PC port, Square Enix has done wonders, with upwards of a 1080p resolution and a non-demanding 60fps, improving heavily over the somewhat subpar looking PS3 predecessor. Unfortunately, it’s not all roses and rainbows as there could have been more graphical options and a lot of the existing assets, specifically shadow resolution and texture work, show their age.
Adam Beck · Dec 13, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Perhaps if I was previously enamored with the worlds of Final Fantasy, Nova Chrysalia would have intrigued me more. While I'll never know what my perspective would have been, I do know that, as a newcomer to Final Fantasy, Lightning Returns didn't feel unwelcoming. From combat to characters, the game did a lot to make sure I knew where I was, what I was doing, and why I was doing it. The problem isn't that it's a poor choice for newcomers; the problem is that it's a poor game.
Chris Watters · Apr 04, 2014 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is a vastly different game to any other in the franchise. Your enjoyment will depend heavily on whether you liked the previous two titles, with close followers of the story arc much more likely to appreciate the closure that this instalment provides. There are flaws, but the combat, characters, and time system all provide plenty of entertainment. And while we’re sure that those that have disliked the divisive plotline so far will be glad that it’s over, fans will be thrilled to see the series end with a bang rather than a fizzle.
Nathan Michalik · Mar 09, 2014 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - I’ll give Lightning Returns one thing, though. At least it didn’t slip up on the background music. The game’s music is pretty evocative, and it raised goosebumps on my arms more than once. But background music is not enough to redeem this sinking ship of a game, and I’m glad Square Enix is finally letting the Final Fantasy XIII series sail off into the sunset.
Mary-Anne Lee · Feb 27, 2014 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Final Fantasy remains trapped in limbo, then, but at least it now has all the right moves to fight its way out.
Edge Staff · Feb 20, 2014 Reviewed on - Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is a disappointing conclusion to what should have been a barnstorming final chapter in the Final Fantasy XIII saga. Strong combat that's severely undermined, a feeble narrative and a veritable litany of hit and miss moments all conspire to make Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII an agonising missed opportunity.
Lee Abrahams · Feb 18, 2014 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be lauded in the short term for its fun battle system, but remembered in the long term for its bad story and atrocious ending. A demo has been out for some time now, which showcases the battle system quite well. As is often the case with RPG demos, it hides the flaws of the final product, giving no taste of what it's really like to play. Lightning Returns creates that empty feeling of being in a huge world with nothing to do, tries to put the player in a hurry despite there being no reason to rush, and tops it all off with an ending that embarrasses the game industry.
GR Staff · Feb 14, 2014 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Overall, there is nothing enjoyable about Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. It’s hard to care about the story, quests, battles, or anything the game throws your way. It kind of feels like Square is just trying to make you care by default because the game has Final Fantasy characters in it. Unfortunately, Lightning Returns has nothing to do with prior FFXIII titles. It’s just a quickly thrown together mess of mechanics that feels like it’s trying and failing to be an open world American style RPG.
CheatCC Staff · Feb 14, 2014 Reviewed onRead full review - Lighting returns is a good game with some interesting mechanics and a well acted story. It has some game play quirks that I could have done without, but in the end, I enjoyed my time with it. It takes some getting used to with both the combat and the time mechanics, but after adjusting to how it wants to be played, it offers up a nice installment of the XIII series.
