- LEGO The Hobbit has some strengths, and it's perhaps tempting to look at the sheer size of the world and volume of content and give it a pass. However, we feel that the frequently poor design and shoddy gameplay experience represent a low in the franchise. We're often supportive and complimentary of the LEGO series for what it does achieve despite some flaws, but this is a sloppy effort from Warner Bros. and TT Games. A typically rushed movie tie-in, and an unfortunate blemish on an otherwise excellent franchise.
Thomas Whitehead · Jun 03, 2014 Reviewed on Wii URead full review - LEGO The Hobbit attempts to take what has arguably become one of he most repetitive franchises in modern gaming and make it feel new again, but unfortunately falls short of hitting its mark every step of the way. The idea of including a world map in place of the open world found between stages in the home console versions is a step in the right direction, but it doesn't carry enough weight with it to change the gameplay in any significant way.
Ron DelVillano · May 20, 2014 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - LEGO the Hobbit for the PS Vita is a fun and charming game. While some fans have strong issues with the handheld version of the LEGO games, I find them to be quite enjoyable. If you’re one of those people, this game isn’t going to change your opinion, but if you play it for what it is (as opposed to what it’s not) you will find a really good game filled with entertaining content that will keep you busy for hours.
Brad Gruetzmacher · May 02, 2014 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - When it comes right down to it, LEGO The Hobbit isn't a terrible game, but it's isn't a terribly good one either. The LEGO formula may be finally getting a bit stagnant, and the new additions, while cool, may be too little, too late. If the final section had been included at retail, I'm not sure my opinion would have swayed much more in either direction, but it certainly is noticeable in it's omission.
Ian Bonds · Apr 27, 2014 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Presentation-wise The Hobbit stands tall. The source material may not lend itself as well to the Lego formula as the bright colours and unique characters of the Marvel universe for example but The Hobbit still looks sharp. Environments, especially outdoors, look great and there’s plenty of inspiring visual moments.
Shad Forsyth · Apr 25, 2014 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - In the pantheon of LEGO games, LEGO The Hobbit isn’t the worst by a long shot – but the formula’s certainly getting tired. ...Yes, the same old issues from previous games are still in full effect, and the new additions fail to make any meaningful changes – even in some cases hurting the experience – but if you’re up for more of what the LEGO games have been selling, then these issues probably won’t block your way.
Alex Stinton · Apr 25, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - This sort of gameplay is simplistic and somewhat satisfying, and is often accompanied by sassy dialogue from the characters that are doing to bashing. Unfortunately Lego The Hobbit is a chip off a too-serious block, and its subject matter is just not suitable for the tried-and-tested Lego game formula. Fans of the series will appreciate this game, but for all gamers looking for yet another satisfying Lego game will probably want to try one like The Lego Movie Videogame.
Mary-Anne Lee · Apr 24, 2014 Reviewed on PS4, XB1, PS3, X360, Wii URead full review - I always struggle to write LEGO reviews. I feel like the series has paved its own way, and fans are there for each iteration. Also with the lack of advancing the series much beyond a few tweaks between games, it mostly boils down to love for the source material. The same is true for LEGO The Hobbit. Fans of Tolkien’s work or the recent movies are sure to enjoy the journey there, and back again.
Ken McKown · Apr 22, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Though its glitches and control problems are disappointing and often frustrating, LEGO The Hobbit is fun from start to finish. It’s filled with LEGO-style detail that charmed me immediately, and the action-focused levels are satisfying and engaging. The puzzles are nothing special and relatively predictable, but that doesn’t stop it from being an adventure fit to bear the LEGO name.
Kallie Plagge · Apr 21, 2014 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Lego The Hobbit brings the first two Hobbit films to life in TT Games' great, family-friendly style. On PlayStation 4, the game looks absolutely amazing, especially in the cutscenes and major battles when it matters most. Unfortunately, the source material lets down TT Games here; the dwarves just aren't very distinct when compared to the cast of Lego Marvel and The Lego Movie. All told, Lego The Hobbit is very good, but it doesn't reach the best of those previous titles.
