- All told, Koi DX is a cheap, uninspired game that has the beginnings of some good ideas, and it fails to execute any of them in a meaningful or memorable way. Boring gameplay, mediocre art direction, and an anaemic amount of content dooms this one to insignificance. We would strongly advise you to steer clear, as you very clearly are getting what you pay for, if not less. With so many other quality games available on the eShop right now, this is one to miss.
Mitch Vogel · Nov 24, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Koi isn’t a bad game. It just lacks content and a level of polish found in even the smallest of indie games these days. It’s a game that you can load up and just explore, without too much threat involved. But in the same breath, don’t expect too much back in return.
John Whitehouse · May 05, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Koi is lovely to look at and listen to. It's also only an hour long, has pointless stealth mechanics, no consistency in puzzles, a nonsensical plot, and generally just feels like a totally empty game.
Samuel Guglielmo · Apr 29, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Koi has an alluring exterior, but is ultimately a shallow puzzle game lacking in both focus and direction. As someone with an interest in Chinese culture, who has been following the reintroduction of foreign consoles into that market with great interest, this is a disappointment.
Kyle MacGregor · Apr 26, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Koi is a really short game. You can complete the game’s story in about an hour or so. Aside from the story there are puzzles pieces that can be collected in each level and there are also different character skins you can play with. There isn’t much else beyond that. Koi’s simplistic approach is ultimately its downfall. The game offers little to no challenge, is fairly shallow and is way too short even by today’s standards. It feels like so much more could have been done with this game.
Sidd Masand · Apr 24, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Despite the feeling of catharsis I achieve when playing Koi, it still lacks many of the fundamentals that make a video game compelling. Add in the fact that the experience only lasts around two hours, and the result is a game that feels incomplete. Perhaps a future installment could add weekly downloads that would help players achieve peace on a daily basis without being repetitive.
Jeb Haught · Apr 21, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - KOI is a game that knows how to push your buttons. It draws you in with its beautiful soundscape and enchanting premise, but then takes you through an often shallow experience with some frustrating moments that discord with its otherwise serene exterior. It's a game which seems far more suited to mobile play than console, where longer play sessions highlight its lack of depth.
Jacob Hull · Apr 20, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - KOI is a game that almost went somewhere. While it has a pleasing aesthetic, and peaceful ambiance, what’s on offer is woefully short.
Paulmichael Contreras · Apr 19, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - It’s easy to see what could have been with a more unified vision and the fact that its issues lie more in its additions rather than technical follies is nothing short of disappointing. When a game falls around the two-hour mark, there has to be complete conceptual unity, otherwise the end result is going to feel like a scattering of neat ideas that feel shoehorned in rather than elements making up a cohesive whole.
Matt Whittaker · Apr 19, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - KOI is without question a game that relies more on its look and sound than its gameplay, as the overall design is a perfect fit for such a game, but the gameplay is very lacking. Even though the experience of going through the levels can be somewhat enjoyable the first time, the overall lack of difficulty and the shortness of KOI really makes it hard to justify buying for most PS4 owners.
