Critic Reviews

  • Despite such criticism, it is in discovery that Knytt Underground manages to excite by luring your curiosity throughout its entirety. Broody and evocative, Nifflas signals the emerging rise of the indies on the Nintendo eShop, crafting experiences that rival even the platform holder’s lofty creations.

  • Its fourth-wall breaking and deliberately playful approach to game conventions is to be commended, but the balance of artistic merit and fulfilling gaming experience isn't quite achieved. If you're game for the challenge in both gameplay and simply understanding what Knytt Underground is trying to achieve, then dive in.

  • Interest will dry out more quickly, especially if you focus on the story, which is either trying to be "so stupid that it becomes awesome," is designed to make you hate stories in games, or both. Either way, Knytt Underground is brilliantly-designed 2D platformer that offers a ton of content. Just don't think about the story too much. "blah blah blah blah blah" indeed.

  • Beautiful open world, engaging gameplay featuring a mix of RPG and platformer elements, enjoyable puzzles, casual difficulty level, idealistic and meta-funny, atmospheric soundtrack and environments but plot and dialogue somewhat immature and disorganized, underdeveloped characters, character art looks out of place.

A 2D platformer with a heavy focus on swearing fairies and religious themes should not be this good. That's the game's last contradiction: it really is.

  • What Knytt Underground lacks in presentation and polish it makes up in scope and content. This is the vision of a single developer on a sprawling scale. You’ll feel lost at first, but thanks to your own curiosity you'll end up diving in and exploring everything its caverns have to offer.
