- The spirit of Killer Instinct remains sometimes painfully true to its roots, but Double Helix has competently filled the gaps in the original's foundation. They've also laid new groundwork to teach players how fighting games actually work. For now, Killer Instinct feels like a beta but next year, it could be something much more.
Arthur Gies · Dec 10, 2013 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Its initial setup is solid, as Killer Instinct can take on many roles to satisfy players of varying skill levels. ...Killer Instinct possesses the fundamentals to be a crowd-pleasing title, and certainly does a decent job of inviting less experienced players into the genre, but its limited modes and insistence on milking your funds KOs a game with potential.
Nick Akerman · Dec 04, 2013 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - I’m also not fully “on-board” with their pricing model, but they do have two good packages to choose from that unlocks all the characters. Don’t get me wrong; if you enjoy fighting games this is definitely something to check out. I find myself coming back to the game as it has that “just one more game!” hook in me and I have to say that I’m looking forward to future updates to make the this good game even better!
Matt Cullen · Dec 01, 2013 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Still, this reboot is worth paying $20 for as it’s better than the original games in every way. It plays smoother, looks better than anything out there, and has a kick-ass soundtrack with a goofball announcer to boot. If you absolutely must recreate your childhood, then pick up the $40 pack, but most will be satisfied spending half that.
Jeremy Peeples · Nov 28, 2013 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - The great training offered by Killer Instinct will help you get your feet wet, and it might just introduce you to some concepts that'll make you understand all fighting games on a slightly deeper level. That's a great touch. The flexible pricing is nice, but even at the full $40, Killer Instinct feels like a solid addition to the genre. It's also one of the better games to hit the Xbox One at launch, so if you've ever been interested in a fighting game, you might want to give this one a shot.
Jeff Gerstmann · Nov 26, 2013 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Granted they could arrive as paid DLC in future “seasons," but for now, Killer Instinct feels incomplete. On the bright side, you can test out Killer Instinct for free and then tailor your investment moving forward. The fighting is more fluid than ever, well-balanced, and truly satisfying for fans while being accessible for newbies. If only there were more of it across more characters that had a story, Killer Instinct would be gold. But as it stands, it’s not yet living up to the potential the series has.
Anthony Severino · Nov 24, 2013 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Killer Instinct may not be the new king of fighting games, and it feels a bit rushed in terms of content, but it is very solid and far exceeds my expectations for it. With a pricing scheme that doesn't feel exploitative and a balanced character roster, the well developed mechanics will keep you busy until the new content drops next year. It'll be interesting to see what the community at large thinks of it over time, but in my living room, it's a welcome addition to my fighting game roster.
Chris Carter · Nov 23, 2013 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Killer Instinct is an absolute blast to play, and appeals to both my casual and hardcore fighter sensibilities. It has one of my favorite fighting game engines in recent memory. I hope that more characters are added, and players get the ability to create spectator lobbies in the future. Despite those problems, Double Helix has exceeded expectations in resurrecting this franchise as a fun and accessible fighter.
Jason Oestreicher · Nov 22, 2013 Reviewed on XB1 - Overall, Killer Instinct has a lot of potential to become one of the most played fighting games on the market. Unfortunately, if it wasn’t already hindered by its Xbox One exclusivity it will certainly be hindered by its small roster and sparse offering of modes. ...but with the fighting game community’s short attention span and short sighted tendency to judge a fighting game by the size of roster, this Killer Instinct may be fated to be nothing more than a flavor-of-the-week.
Angelo M. D'Argenio · Nov 22, 2013 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Killer Instinct certainly is a fun game that does everything fighting games need to do right. ...So unless you have a dedicated group of fighting gamers to play the game with you, you probably won’t get the Killer Instinct experience you were hoping for, and even if you do, high-level play feels a bit shallow. Killer Instinct certainly has a lot of potential to become a great tournament fighter after we delve deeper into the gameplay system and the roster expands. It just isn’t quite there yet.
