  • Just Cause 2's general ambition for variety gives it the odd free-pass where things aren't as tight as they should be, but some "gamey" design choices and the worst voice acting ever to grace a video game almost undo the package as a whole. Thankfully, the sheer scale of the game's setting, and the simple thrill of wreaking havoc within it make up for much of the game's misgivings.

  • There are morsels of fun to be had in Just Cause 2. It's a noble attempt at delivering a truly open world where you are rewarded for doing pretty much anything you want to do and blowing up stuff. Using timed explosives to blow up a gas tank while Rico coldly walks away, and then getting a big flashing display of how many chaos points that earned you, is a satisfying feeling. It's just that the moments where everything works like it should are scarce.

  • Not to sound too harsh, but there's nothing all that original about Just Cause 2--this is, in the purest sense, iterative game design. Many of its best ideas feel lifted from other games, including Mercenaries 2, Red Faction: Guerrilla, Bionic Commando, The Force Unleashed, Pursuit Force, among others. What makes Just Cause 2 special is the way those parts are assembled for both the minimum amount of reality, and the maximum amount of fun, the law will allow.

  • Just Cause 2 has a ton of great content, the main story took me 16 hours with only 27% of the game completed. Anyone who wants to find every collectible in the game is going to be busy for a while. Someone who wants to just play through the main story line won’t be disappointed either. The game is a good length and the sheer vastness of everything keeps things fresh and interesting throughout the story.

  • The biggest disappointment by far is the lack of multiplayer, which is understandable giving the game’s ambitious scope, but a missed opportunity nevertheless. But none of these issues diminish the countless memorable moments Just Cause 2 provides, born out of the spontaneous chaos the player creates while simply exploring the world.

  • Just Cause 2 is a gorgeous, fun, rollercoaster of a game. It's far from perfect, but its best qualities shine through, leaving the lacklustre gunplay as more of a mildly unpleasant aftertaste than a meal ruining disaster. It's a game that begs to be messed around with, for you to discover new ways to use the tools at your disposal and to take it all in the light-hearted way the developer intended. Chances are you'll forget why Rico was on Panau in the first place, but his exploits should live long in your memory.

  • These aren't game-breaking flaws, however; certainly not in light of the huge world Just Cause 2 places at your fingertips. Even the glitches you encounter--sound stutters, maybe a lockup or two--aren't likely to be too bothersome, and can be somewhat alleviated by installing the game to your hard drive. But Just Cause 2 stands out more for its joys than its blemishes. After all, you can grapple to a gas canister, shoot it, and fly into the air like a rocket. And if that sounds like fun to you, it's time for a vacation to the island paradise of Panau.

  • Just Cause 2 is an amazing world rich with gameplay possibilities with a merely decent game tacked onto it. Your enjoyment will directly depend on how much creativity and time you invest in the experience. If you're interested in causing chaos and playing around with physics, the game is easy to recommend. You're able to do things here that you won't find in any other game. As long as you don't come to Panau looking for friends, dramatic revelations, or a clear sense of purpose, you won't be disappointed.

  • If there was one word I had to use to describe Just Cause 2, it would be 'ridiculous'. The game never takes itself seriously, which, for the most part, is a good thing. However, sometimes this lackadaisical approach extends into areas where it shouldn't, resulting in an often unpolished, even amateurish experience. Still, the game has fun in spades, so all who pick it up are likely to have a total blast!

I haven't had this much fun with an open-world game in years. Just Cause 2 is over-the-top and insanely fun. There are some issues in the game's presentation and the checkpoint system is far from perfect, but Just Cause 2 is otherwise a must-play for adrenaline junkies. Rico Rodriguez might just be my new hero.

About the game

Rico returns to action in the sequel to Avalanche Studios' gargantuan action game. Just Cause 2 stars Rico Rodriquez, back to wreak havoc once again, this time with a new destination -- the huge playground of the South East Asian islands of Panau. The sequel features more stunts, vehicles and weapons than ever before and an incredible overhauled grappling hook system. Panau itself is an incredibly detailed and vast 1000 sq km game world of different climates and ultra-realistic weather effects.
