  • There are some genuinely standout moments, but I can't help but look back at the likes of Left 4 Dead and just wish Toxic Commando had that same level of charm.

  • GOOD John Carpenter's Toxic Commando doesn't break out so much as cater to the Left4Dead-leaning, even with its more open-ended approach and use of vehicles.

  • What Toxic Commando does, it does very well – but most of it has already been seen elsewhere. Carving through zombies is fun, but by failing to leverage the idea of superpowered protagonists, the threat of fatigue after completing the story for the first time looms large, which isn't ideal for an online game like this.

  • Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Instead of relying on Saber Interactive’s ground-breaking Swarm Engine for more magnificent undead horde set pieces, John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando instead trades this in for needlessly open-ended maps with a heavy reliance on bland driving.

  • Verdict 7 10 0 1 Bearing the legacy of Left 4 Dead and Back 4 Blood, John Carpenter's Toxic Commando lands with an almighty bang when it comes to gunplay and spectacle defence sequences against armies of undead numbering in the thousands.

  • Toxic Commando delivers chaotic zombie action and deep customization, though the grind and forgettable story keep it from fully shining.

  • HIGH Activating an EMP tower that wipes out hundreds of zombies at once. LOW Bot partners are really, really bad at freeing grabbed players.

  • Toxic Commando never really manages to be more than the sum of its parts.

About the game

Take control of one of the commandos, team up with your friends and send the Sludge God and its horde of things-that-should-never-be back to the underworld. Choose the class that matches your playstyle, pile into your favorite ride, and unload an array of gunfire, grenades, special abilities, and freaking katanas as you save the planet.
