- It delivers a truly extraordinary recreation of the GeoCities era of the internet that absolutely nails its '90s aesthetic to present a living, breathing world that's a joy to spend time browsing around, soaking up the atmosphere and reliving the anarchic early days of the internet as you slowly untangle the puzzles at the heart of its narrative.
PJ O'Reilly · Aug 30, 2020 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - It's not unplayable by any means, but squeezing mouse and keyboard functionality onto a controller will always end up fiddly. There's absolutely fun to be had here, though, and those looking for something different should try it regardless.
Stephen Tailby · Aug 25, 2020 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - If you take it at face value as a simulation, you’ll find a faithful and rewarding experience; a free demo on the eShop should give you an idea of whether you'll enjoy the game. Ultimately, it’s best to take your time with Hypnospace Outlaw rather than rushing through to the end. The devil, as they say, is in the poorly-designed webpage details.
Jordan Rudek · Aug 25, 2020 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Hilarious, intricate, and touching, Hypnospace Outlaw is a surreal, loving tribute to a younger, more innocent Internet as well as a compelling detective game.
Nathaniel Berens · May 13, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - A larger narrative emerges as the story progresses, which ties in themes of Y2K panic and online drama. Itâs all blended with the delightful sensation of being sent back to the freewheeling, anything-is-possible attitude of the early days of the modern internet. Hypnospace Outlaw is a great ride, even though youâre the one checking tickets and enforcing the rules.
Jeff Cork · Apr 08, 2019 Reviewed on PC - Unlike Strafe, Hypnospace Outlaw delivers on exactly what it sets out to do right out of the gate. It’s got some issues but most of them stem from wanting more, which is a good sign. Thankfully, there’s already a Steam Workshop support update in the works, meaning that Hypnospace may still get the expansive number of bizarre tangents it so richly deserves. Until then, Hypnospace Outlaw stands as a unique one of a kind adventure that’s hard to pass up.
Alex Santa Maria · Mar 29, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Hypnospace Outlaw is a witty, retro-styled point and click puzzle game that brings you into the depths of the ‘90s internet while testing your solving skills. While it can be suitable for all ages, it would be better catered to an older audience with its jokes that only someone who has lived through that time would understand. It may take a few sittings in order to complete the game but just make sure you remember about it in order to play it.
Dan Alcazar · Mar 26, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Hypnospace Outlaw is a perfect recreation of what the internet once was, and in some ways still is: a glorious mess of friendship and anarchy. Itâs probably good we donât have auto-playing music anymore, though.
Colm Ahern · Mar 25, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - As an exploration of early-ish internet culture, Hypnospace Outlaw demonstrates how far we've travelled online over the past 20 years while at the same time asking whether we've gone anywhere at all. The bandwidth may have improved since 1999 but the content can look all too familiar today.
David Wildgoose · Mar 20, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Those criticisms aside, Hypnospace Outlaw is, rather unexpectedly, one of the best detective games on PC. Its puzzles are layered and complex, but never unfair. It respects you enough to let you figure things out at your own pace, and with almost no hand-holding. But if you do hit a wall (trust me, you will) there's a well-designed hint system buried in there too.
