HyperParasite has a wonderful look and feel, but is marred by its “rogue” elements. It doesn’t do anything to push the genre forward and feels like yet another game that I would likely never finish due to tedium.

  • Hyperparasite leans heavily on its setting to stand-out from other top-down shooters, and in that sense, it succeeds in having a great, dark, B-movie tone that feels distinct and engaging. There’s a real variety to the different host bodies you vulture off-of, which would provide a great flow of hoping from body-to-body if some of them didn’t just feel like they will set you behind by doing so.

  • Curiously, not everyone can be absorbed on your first attempt, and so you’ll need to collect brains and invest cash in order to unlock the more powerful hosts. This obviously adds to the release’s replayability, but when paired with its punishing difficulty, the formula begins to grate. Local co-op doesn’t really ease the repetition, although your pals will certainly appreciate the pop culture references.

  • “I had a lot of fun with HyperParasite. It didn’t strike me like anything too special, but it still is a game that plays its cards right seeing as everything is polished and optimized. I would’ve preferred to play it with a mouse, just to make aiming easier, but as mentioned in the review, this is not an issue with the game; it also happens with Enter The Gungeon and other games of this kind. Overall, I’d recommend HyperParasite, it is a more than worthy purchase.”

  • My time spent with HyperParasite was a lot of fun. Aside from the difficulty at times, it was enjoyable to take over host bodies. Being able to take over people and use different abilities kept the game feeling fresh. HyperParasite is definitely worth the asking price of $17.99.

  • HyperParasite is a must-try for all who love Crimsonland and similar twin-stick shooters. The action is perhaps better than ever before in the genre, while the game adds and expands the rules of these games and creates new frontiers. Also unlike the famous titles from the genre is its immersive story. And, the whole premise of playing as a body-snatching alien parasite sounds too cool to just pass on.

  • The environments are nice enough and display an '80s aesthetic that works rather well, but the character models themselves lack detail, resulting in a bit of difficulty telling them apart during the more hectic moments. We also noticed some slowdown here and there, but thankfully this is minimal. If you’re not too fussed about detailed visuals, then HyperParasite will no doubt keep you hooked with its unique parasite gameplay mechanic and exciting gun-play.

  • HyperParasite is the kind of game that will ultimately attract a cult audience of hardcore Gungeoneers and Souls-like aficionados. It offers tons of challenge, much of which is legitimately balanced to make you feel as rewarded as possible when you finally overcome a tough section.

  • HyperParasite has a really nice aesthetic style, with bright, chunky visuals complimented by a decent synth soundtrack. There are some nice ideas here too, being able to posses bodies to fight back offers up some fun gameplay and scenarios. But it takes for too long to unlock more bodies, and the combat and difficulty is too uneven to really get the desire to have ‘one more go’.

  • Unlocking all characters means there’s always something to work towards; add to that the game’s tongue-in-cheek 80s atmosphere and bombastic soundtrack, and there’s plenty of reason to keep jumping back in. It’s just a shame that HyperParasite‘s unforgiving nature means most of its players won’t ever fully experience what the game has to offer.

About the game

It’s the 80’s all over again. Only this time, the human race has more than an obnoxious pop culture to contend with. With World War III nearing its demise, Earth only just begins to catch its breath when it is threatened by yet another menace. Unlike the preposterous mullets of its inhabitants however, this one’s invisible – a parasitic organism capable of making hosts of unsuspecting human beings, consuming what’s left of their souls and wreaking unfathomable havoc. And it’s spreading. With a vengeance.
