  • The re-release of Homeworld shows how much the series really was a triumph for the RTS genre, with the decade old gameplay still enthralling to play after all these years. For newcomers and hardened veterans that are interested, there are many good reasons to check out this title from Gearbox Studios.

  • It's overwhelming, and deliberately so. Campaign missions can become very difficult if you fail to preserve forces between missions and the technicalities of combat—like micromanaging units to attack the softer top armour of frigates—becomes arduous in Homeworld's biggest scraps. The steep learning curve is entirely worth the effort, though, for the fantasy of commanding such an extraordinary collection of sleek, glowing vehicles, and for the spectacle when they boost into battle.

As a modern re-release of two classic games, the Homeworld Remastered Collection should ultimately be considered a benchmark. Gearbox have delivered on all fronts: visuals, playability, compatibility and spirit. It’s also a heck of a lot of fun.

  • Overall though, the game is still a blast to play. The glorious visuals and soundtrack make one feel like they are redirecting an episode of the recent Battlestar Galatica reboot. Homeworld is a unique game in the space combat genre and with this Remastered version, Gearbox has proven that you can go back home again.

  • The gameplay in particular holds up very nicely, and proves that the original was well ahead of its time. Unfortunately, it's held back a bit by its clumsy interface, and formations are currently quite broken, which will hurt its standing with long-time fans. But all that said, it's hard not to love Homeworld Remastered Collection's striking and memorable space battles, which have very much stood the test of time.

  • The Homeworld series' legacy, however, has always lain within its story-focused campaigns, whose excellent action and inherent beauty endure and excel, even in light of the 16 years that have passed since the original's arrival. It is a huge universe out there, but Homeworld Remastered Collection makes a great case for asserting your presence within it.

  • Homeworld Remastered Collection is a testament to game development done right, both in its original form and in the meticulously updated version, and one that should not be overlooked by any fan of the genre.

  • If you never experienced the Homeworld titles during their initial run, this collection is a great way to take a look at an incredible RTS experience in a world that sees the genre waning. The package does a dutiful job providing classic versions of both titles as well, so if you’re a purist or you just want to compare and contrast versions, they’re great to take a peek at and a welcome bonus.

  • Whether you’re a fan of sci-fi, real-time strategy, or simply just video games in general, Homeworld Remastered Collection is a must-have if you haven’t played the series before. For those who spent years guarding their precious pressings of these classics, it’s time to rejoice, the Homeworld series is just as good as you remember it.

  • Despite its age, Homeworld still managed to provide a quality RTS experience unlike any other. The occasional rough edges show, like its overly sluggish pace and sonorous quiet, but for those who can push through the silence you'll find a deep and engaging strategy title with a solid campaign and enough replayability to keep you entertained until the inevitable Ultra HD VR re-release another fifteen years from now.
