- Hohokum is a pretty, vibrantly colorful game with very stylized art that may feel evocative to some, and too abstract to others. I think I fall somewhere in the middle. Games like Hohokum sometimes come across as self-consciously arty, as though the spirit of creativity was enough to power the game. It rarely is, and the player can be left feeling unsatisfied. In Hohokum’s case, there’s a layer of opacity that can morph into annoying.
Mark Steighner · Jul 28, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - You can earn a trophy for completing Hohokum in under an hour, but with all of the fun features, sights and sounds on offer, you’ll want to sit back and really take the time to wander around each level, leaving no stone unturned, or elephant creature unruffled. If you need a break from the sweat-inducing shoot ‘em ups and want to kick back with a relaxing game that’s a feast for the eyes, then this game is definitely worth the download.
Harriet Keers · Jul 13, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Hohokum is love at first sight - it will have you captivated for its opening hours. And if you believe charm is more important than challenge, you'll be enthralled throughout. ...However, there's no denying its beauty and therefore you should still give it a go if you're happy to explore its beautiful, abstract worlds under the full understanding that underneath them lies somewhat underwhelming gameplay.
Chris Scullion · Aug 21, 2014 Reviewed on PS4 - As a game, it is hard to recommend Hohokum. With loose goals and a lack of action, Hohokum may receive the similar criticism that Proteus received when it was released on the PlayStation Vita. However, as an experience, Hohokum is wonderful. A charming, charismatic trip through a plethora of multi-coloured worlds that you can pick up and play in minutes, but get lost in for hours.
Charlie Large · Aug 21, 2014 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Through the three or so hours that it takes to complete Hohokum, you’ll almost certainly fall in love with its impeccable art direction and genius audio pairing. Sadly, in the gameplay realm, this wriggle-‘em-up doesn’t really have enough direction to make it truly engaging. The title’s at its best when you meander through its oversaturated scenes without purpose, but that means that it’s not recommended for everyone.
Graham Banas · Aug 20, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The lack of depth in Hohokum might be the most disappointing thing about it. ...I’m sure Hohokum will find a home among those players who love to relax and unwind after a long day, and I acknowledge that it successfully creates that relaxing atmosphere by being aesthetically pleasing in every facet. Once the novelty of the happy colors and great music wears off, however, you’re left with a game with no direction, no depth, and no point. Hohokum? More like just ho-hum.
Jason Fanelli · Aug 18, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Hohokum may look bright and colorful, but it can feel awfully like stumbling around in a darkened room. It's a double-edged sword. Charting the unknown can feel as stressful as it is intoxicating. There's serenity to be found in the shadows, but it's just as easy to become agitated as you reach out into the black, searching for that elusive light switch.
Kyle MacGregor · Aug 16, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Hohokum offers more than you'd expect but less than you'd want; without gameplay depth to back up its visuals, it sparks the imagination but doesn't kindle it. Its audiovisual melange is hypnotic up to a point, but its charm is fleeting, leaving you with a hollow gameplay experience at its core. Still, I'm glad I spent time in Hohokum's whimsical world. Its design sense is unquestionably sound, and it's easy to lose yourself in its cheerful facade, if for only a few hours.
Danny Cowan · Aug 15, 2014 Reviewed on Vita - Hohokum gives you everything you need to enter a colorful and freeform world with little restraint toward the kind of art exploration that turns anyone into a finger-paint prodigy. That doesn’t make for the greatest video game, even if its charm lasts far longer than you’d think. ...Try not to approach Hohokum with the mind to “complete it” or “solve it” as many avid players like to treat their video games.
Daniel Bischoff · Aug 14, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Hohokum is a different kind of game that prizes aimless interaction and exploration above completing specific objectives. It's a title that brings together a cute, minimal art style and a great soundtrack to create a zen experience. It's worth a play, but not everyone will appreciate its strengths.
