  • Hearthstone is Blizzard’s entry into the Trading Card Game (TCG) genre, and it’s a game that very heavily focuses on beautiful animations, dazzling sound effects, and devilish randomness.

  • Addictive, evolving and constantly enjoyable, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is in every way a masterpiece of modern gaming.

  • None of its contemporaries, digital or physical, can match it in terms of value per dollar. You can play endlessly for free – and believe me, you’ll be compelled to – but you also won’t mind forking over a bit of dough for the satisfaction of opening packs. From its gameplay to its aesthetics to its accommodating pay model, Hearthstone is, in a word, elegant.

  • Hearthstone is a super robust and utterly excellent virtual card game. The main gameplay is incredible, it will steal you away for hours and leave you wanting more, more, more. The touches on top of this (including deck building) add a degree of depth that caters to the hardcore. The end result is something utterly compelling that is incredibly well presented, making it highly accessible. However this presentation is never a sacrifice, you still have all you need for a complex and enjoyable experience.

  • Now, your time investment may grow to be worth much more than that amount, as is the case with many games under the Blizzard banner. That part, once again, they definitely have gotten right.

In short, Hearthstone is borderline alchemy, turning physical systems into digital gold.

  • Cards shimmer with special effects to indicate their abilities– they’ll cloud over with smoke when they’re stealthy, or flutter in the wind when they have extra attacks. The card art is evocative, with many familiar Warcraft faces like trolls and murlocs. And the epic cards, when you encounter them, will blow you away with their devastating attacks.

  • Though I'm already eager for Blizzard to expand on the number of cards offered, I don't see the appeal of that depth running dry any time soon. Between its friendly design and its flexible approach to a free-to-play economy, Hearthstone has successfully pulled me into a genre that I didn't care about in the least. But even more incredibly, it's kept me rapt longer than any games I've played in years, and shows no signs of letting up.

An essential, endless, enchanting time-sink that is pioneering on iPad, yet somewhat tainted by pay-to-win

  • Hearthstone is addictive, highly strategic, and chock-full of fun collectible card battling; the fact that it's totally free (if you want it to be) makes it one of the best values in gaming today. This is your new obsession; embrace it.
