  • Proving that even the Grim Reaper can’t catch a break, Have a Nice Death is another rogue filled with snappy combat, gorgeous visuals and slick writing. It’s hard, and sometimes doesn’t feel rewarding, but it’s definitely worth the grind. Feeling like Death never felt so good.

  • Have A Nice Death makes a couple mishaps that affect its flow and theme execution a great deal. Still, boss fights and engaging combat make the experience worth trying. It may not be for everyone, but roguelike fans will enjoy it.

  • Have a Nice Death delivers fun and charming roguelike gameplay that will keep you coming back for more. While the repeated process of dying and starting over isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, people looking for a challenging experience will definitely be satisfied. Further enhanced by a great atmosphere, this game may be hard to master, but it’s even harder to put down.

  • Have a Nice Death is not only this game's title, it's an interjection. It's the bully at the gaming playground. It's the ex that keeps coming back to your house to get their belongings, one thing at a time. You beat these types of games before, right? All of that is gone. Still a little buggy, but at it's price point, you'll have a hard time blaming the glitches, and spend more time telling yourself that you're not good at the game.

The story commentary on working culture, specifically office workers, comes through loud and clear. And having spent my time working in an office building I could relate and even laughed at quite a few of the jokes but what makes roguelites truly enjoyable is the loop that makes having to restart over and over again a joy just simply didn’t seem to be in Have a Nice Death.

  • Have A Nice Death has a great soundtrack, and you’re always greeted with a nice little jingle as you start from Death’s office. The soundtrack matches the style and aesthetic of the game, which is always a really key thing to nail. While, as mentioned above, the graphics are cute but also really well-detailed. Characters are cartoonish and sound like they’re from Animal Crossing, which helps you ignore some of the darker themes surrounding death like accidents and deaths.

  • Each world is based on a specific way to die like Toxic Food or Industrial Pollution. You can eventually unlock elevators to skip over parts of your run that you’ve already played through but there is a serious downside to this. Because you’re able to find specific power-ups on different floors of the company, going straight to a Sorrow with their elevator at the beginning of your run means that you skip over the entire prep period and only have whatever you start with.

  • Overall, Have A Nice Death is a great roguelike experience for those who are looking for something that isn’t too challenging to the genre as a whole. That’s not to say that the game itself lacks difficulty, far from it–the word “death” is literally in the title. But Have A Nice Death knows what it wants to achieve and really sharpens its blade on the combat, movement, and overall accessibility of its roguelike gameplay. Its unique style and theming definitely set it apart, although that really can’t be said for the characters you meet along the way.

  • Have a Nice Death is an absolutely fantastic time. Whilst the anima system and some lacking curses are enough of a nuisance to be noticeable, they don’t overshadow the rest of the game’s excellent qualities. Not only is it one of the best looking games I've ever played, but its roguelike loop provides a perfect base of simplicity that acts as a foundation for crunchy, fast-paced fights.

  • Have a Nice Death may not reinvent the wheel for roguelites, but this is a high-quality new entry in the genre. The brutal difficulty, creative theming, and satisfying combat all combine to make this a memorable and worthwhile experience, even if we wish it had better performance.

    About the game

In order to restore order, you'll have to grab your trusty scythe and show your employees who's boss! Discover and explore the darkly-charming, procedurally-generated departments of Death Inc., where you’ll meet a diverse cast of memorable characters—like your affable pumpkin-headed assistant, Pump Quinn—who are always willing to share the latest office gossip. Sharpen your skills (and scythe) through fast-paced hack n’ slash combat, utilizing over 30 unique weapons and spells you can find and upgrade to create devastating combinations. Since Death can’t die, use what you’ve learned and earned to overcome the numerous minions and bosses in each department of Death Incorporated... over and over. A performance review after every run guarantees that you’ll unlock interesting items and upgrades that will help you progress on your journey. Taking more power for yourself is a controversial move in Death Incorporated’s company culture. For instance, adopting a Curse upgrade for yourself might result in the Labor Inspector granting your subordinates enhanced powers, or worse, raising the cost of koffee and other items that are vital to your work output.
