  • Hammerwatch II’s graphics and world design are amazing, and the soundtrack fits super well into each area. The gameplay is still a little frustrating, though. And with the very real chance of losing all of your progress, I wouldn’t say it’s worth it. It’s sad to see such a well-designed game ruined by such fatal bugs.

  • For everything Hammerwatch II does well, there's a downside. In a series that is now a decade old, this is the worst game in it and it suffers from issues that the studio should have resolved long ago. Maybe it just isn't a good fit for consoles or maybe the developers technical skill doesn't match their ambition but whatever it is, we feel pretty let down by this one.

  • There are times Hammerwatch II can be a lot of fun. Exploring massive dungeons and taking down hordes of enemies is usually a good time, and Hammerwatch II captures that, at least if you pick one of the right classes. I can see a group of friends with a well-balanced party having an excellent time with it, and that’s really who these games are for, first and foremost. Ultimately though, Hammerwatch II makes too many poor design choices for me to recommend it to most players. There’s a good game in here somewhere, but it’s buried under too many flaws.

  • The game, sadly, often feels like a slog, The single-player is quite dull and a hard-to-recommend experience. Multiplayer is the main format of this game. On Normal difficulty as the Ranger class, the game is nearly impossible. My wolf is the only reason I am able to make it through.

  • As a solo experience, Hammerwatch II entertains but doesn’t impress. Your mileage may vary if you can team up with a party of friends. Don’t let that deter you from giving the game a try on your own, because there is still a lot of fun to be had here, even if the core loop can get grindy at times. We could do with a rework of the game’s day/night mechanics, but apart from that, Hammerwatch II offers a solid take on the genre, despite not bringing anything new to the table.

  • Hammerwatch II gets into the meat of its gameplay right away. I loved looking for better gear and never felt like I wasn’t progressing toward something the entire time I played. I also loved the freedom to do side-quests when I wanted, no longer beholden to the linear story of the first Hammerwatch.

  • I loved Hammerwatch II's fighting and gameplay, but the lacklustre narrative, unrewarding sidequests, and uninformative quests and world traversal leave much to be desired.

  • Hammerwatch 2 is a delightful enough RPG romp held back by some issues that seem to cling stubbornly to the era that inspired it. A better map and more fast travel options would go a long way. As it stands it’s a lot of fun for fans of the genre, but doesn’t do a lot to really stand out in today’s market.
