  • 343 Industries has done an admirable effort in porting Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary onto the PC by maintaining everything from the epic campaign to the old-school matchmaking of the multiplayer component.

  • That’s really the appeal in seeing Halo return to PC like this. Packaged with the rest of the Master Chief Collection, it’s an easy way to hop in and see what all the fuss was about 20 years ago. If you’ve spent the last 20 years moulding Halo PC into a custom content chimaera, it’s a harder sell. What Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is offering a clean slate.

  • Though it expertly renovates one of the defining campaigns of the console FPS, Halo: Anniversary is perhaps less successful at being a tribute, woefully omitting a large part of what made the series a success on top of somehow forgetting about party favors along the way. In the end, Anniversary comes a bit underdressed to its own celebration, but if you’ve got a soft spot for the Chief or have yet to experience Halo in its original form, now would be a great time to start the fight.

  • If you played and enjoyed Halo Combat Evolved or one of its sequels, then you will find plenty to enjoy with this edition. If you haven't played Halo CE, there's no better time. Few other games with as many miles under their belts look and feel this good. A fresh coat of paint is all this game needed to remind the world how Bungie brought shooters out of the stone age.

  • Halo finds itself in the middle of a brief transitional period at the moment, between Bungie letting go of its sacred property and 343 kicking off its own stewardship of the franchise. It was probably a coincidence that the first game's tenth birthday fell right smack in between those two events, but regardless, Anniversary is a nicely executed, nostalgic way to keep Master Chief active in the public consciousness on an off year.

  • Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is a true tribute to the franchise that started 10 years ago when the original Xbox was released. The game stays true to its roots in gameplay and AI, but the visual facelift that it has been given makes it more then just an HD upgrade, as the new visuals are so much better and add to an already solid game.

  • Halo Anniversary sits in a middle ground between faithful remake and spirited reinvention. Players who want an exact replica of the original will be frustrated by the absence of a faithful multiplayer experience. Hardcore modern gamers could be annoyed by the dated nature of the campaign design. However, for the majority of players who fit in the space in between, this classic game has received a new coat of paint and gives you reason enough to re-enter the fold.

  • All in all, this is a welcome return to an adventure that changed the face of gaming a decade ago. The upgraded look does a lot to bring back that sense of awe that we felt the first time we played the game. The multiplayer experience is small, but the compatibility with Reach means there will be a larger pool of people playing these maps. If you've never played the game that launched the Halo franchise, or if you've been longing for a return to this adventure, pick this up. If you're only interested in multiplayer, the map pack is a solid purchase as well.

  • Anniversary is absolutely worth the $39.99 asking price. Though the single-player and multiplayer modes will all feel familiar to anyone who has played a Halo game before, the signature action of the series is still as exciting and expertly tuned as it was 10 years ago. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is a remarkably well-done update for a game that has deservedly earned an honored place in gaming history.

  • At the end of the day, I think Halo: Anniversary is primarily designed for hardcore Halo fans. If you don't already own Halo: Combat Evolved or are still addicted to Halo: Reach, then I highly recommend getting Anniversary. The original Halo is available on Games on Demand for 1200 MS Points, and with the aforementioned map pack alone being sold for the same price, you're getting a lot of bang for your buck.
