  • .hack//G.U. Last Recode is an entertaining collection of games featuring around 70 hours of content. However, it is worth noting said content is largely padded out by repetitive combat segments which might not appeal to everyone.

  • .hack//G.U. Last Recode isn’t a bad game, it’s just aggressively mediocre. These three games weren’t fantastic when they were new and, surprise surprise, they still aren’t great now. Repetitive dungeon design, extremely easy combat, and an often nonsensical narrative prove to be this release’s greatest weaknesses, holding it back from fulfilling the interesting concept of its premise.

  • It feels a little funny to review .hack//G.U. Last Recode for the Switch. Diehard .hack// fans like myself just needed to be told when and where to buy it with no questions asked, and those who have never dipped their toes into the title (or franchise as a whole) have three current platforms to choose from with a basic understanding of what one can reasonably expect from any of them.

  • All in all, if you enjoy anime and story-heavy JRPGs, you’ll probably enjoy this title as well. If you prefer games that feature better gameplay to cutscene ratios, you should probably play something else.

  • Simply put, Last Recode is great. It provides a chance for players both new and old to the .hack series to experience the highly enjoyable, and well thought out .hack//G.U. trilogy. While I’ll admit that I’m not a fan of every single thing that CyberConnect2 did with the remake, most of their tweaks left the game that much better. Although the G.U. trilogy may be getting up there in years, .hack//G.U. Last Recode does an excellent job of keeping things as fresh as possible. If you ask me, there’s never been a better time to visit The World than right now.

  • It helps that the new volume concludes things in a more satisfying manner, but it should have been a more fleshed-out piece of content, especially considering it will last most players only a handful of hours. At the end of the day, if you can put up with all of the baggage, and there’s a lot of it, you’ll find a world worth venturing.

The release of .hack//G.U. Last Recode is a celebration of what I consider to be CyberConnect2’s greatest achievement in gaming thus far. It’s an excellent way for newcomers to experience one of the most underrated JRPGs in the lengthy and excellent catalogue of PS2 games. As for those like myself who loved the original- a chance to say hello to some old friends and finally erase that last bit of regret that’s been lingering all these years.

  • Featuring improved graphics and more polished gameplay, .hack//G.U. Last Recode offers a fascinating look back at a classic JRPG series. While repetition can sometimes bog things down, the story and characters will keep you coming back to The World, determined to see Haseo’s journey through to the end.

  • Somehow, the lack of overpowered new loot to pursue never detracts from the game’s ability to make dungeon crawling interesting. Haseo gets to choose his party of two others from his friends list, which will see some characters busy or offline and force players to switch up their composition every now and then. The AI is also refined enough that it never needs to be micromanaged, which is wonderful.

  • Last Recode turned out to be something that I looked forward to playing at the end of the day. It has a fantastic story with some great worldbuilding, colorful characters, and includes all three original games alongside a newer, fourth volume to carry on the story. The combat became a bit samey and grindy after a while, but I still enjoyed it, and am assuming I will continue to enjoy it throughout the next three volumes I’m going to play.
