  • Without knowing if or when PUBG might come to PS4, H1Z1: Battle Royale gives players an ample replacement if they’d rather not get into Fortnite. Daybreak just needs to start hosting some interesting events and updates in order to keep players hooked and interested going forward. I wouldn’t say no to a little bit of work on those visuals either. Until then, I think I’ll just go watch the movie that inspired this whole gaming trend.

  • Though it’s not without fault, and will likely do little to take away from Fortnite’s ever-growing popularity, H1Z1 on PS4 is a worthy addition to the crowded genre. Plus, it’s free. Can’t complain with that.Microtransactions: Yes, you can buy in-game currency for money. It's free to play though, so that's pretty much expected at this point.

  • Overall, H1Z1 may be a pioneer of the Battle Royale craze, but in the games current form, it just cannot stack up against PUBG and Fortnite due to its lack of focus, polish, and overall content. It’s ambitious map size and player count work against the overall interest of the game’s flow, often making matches feel stretched beyond necessity to no real benefit.

  • To me, H1Z1 seemed to have missed a perfect opportunity to make a big splash on consoles. While the Xbox One version of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is still extremely buggy and runs at a terrible framerate, H1Z1 could have swooped in, taken their thunder, and provided the best tactical/realistic battle royale experience on console.

  • It’s a good introduction to the battle royale genre specially since the game is already free-to-play. However, if you’re someone who’s already played the other more popular BR games like Fortnite and PUBG, then getting into H1Z1 is a bad idea..

  • H1Z1 predicates itself on eliminating the more random factors seen in other battle royale games, and it remains a competent execution of the genre. The game has its intense moments and exhilarating firefights; the thrill of besting 100+ players is very much present. However, the incoherent gameplay elements overshadow the better moments, and the lack of variety in both map design and weapon selection makes H1Z1 lose its appeal rather quick, especially in the genre it spearheaded.

  • H1Z1 may have been the king of the battle royale market back in its days of inception, but with Battlegrounds and Fortnite both evolving the genre in distinctive ways, it no longer feels as relevant. For H1Z1 to regain its audience, it needs to take more creative risks as demonstrated by Auto Royale. Unless this is your first foray into the genre, there may not be enough here currently to maintain your interest once the initial combat high wears off.

H1Z1 checks all of the boxes needed to be a competent battle royale game, but in its main mode it lacks a distinctive sense of character. Without the realistic depth and modular weaponry of PUBG or the wacky base-building antics of Fortnite, its streamlined design rushes toward straightforward, fast-paced action instead and ends up being dull as often as it is exciting. The more interesting thing about H1Z1 is its innovative Auto Royale mode, which translates battle royale mechanics to vehicular combat in a way we haven’t seen done better elsewhere.

  • The novelty of Auto Royale is fun for a few rounds and a nice palate cleanser, but it lacks the compelling gameplay loop of the core mode and ultimately feels like a tacked-on diversion. H1Z1 has some cool modes that give it some extra oomph, but the field of battle royales already has some excellent choices. H1Z1 has a solid foundation of scavenging, shooting, and surviving, but it needs a little more vim and vigor to really compete in the battle royale free-for-all.

  • Solid is the word I would use to describe H1Z1: Battle Royale on PlayStation 4. It’s not the prettiest of games or the most clever, but it does what it does really well and it is a great alternative for those who find all the tree chopping and base building in Fortnite very tiresome. H1Z1 is off to a great start on PlayStation 4 and I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next.
