  • Sequels often tread in muddy water, either playing it too safely and failing to innovate, or, stepping too far from the concept of their predecessors at the expense of their identities. Rarely do we see a sequel that truly builds upon what came before it, whilst staying faithful to its roots and its character. Guacamelee! 2 is of the latter, delivering an adventure that’s remarkably fluid, constantly enthralling, and thoroughly entertaining.

  • While treading the same ground as the original Guacamelee, this sequel take a familiar formula, and spices it up with a few new mechanics, a great story, and tons of rewards for those willing to face the plethora of optional challenges and side quests scattered throughout the world

  • As its primary criticism, Guacamelee! 2 could very well be deemed as more of the same. In any case, the attention to incredible level design and gameplay value proves that DrinkBox Studios had plenty more tricks to show with the old tools in hand. As for first-timers, if you don’t mind being spoiled by the final goings-on of the first adventure, then this sequel is definitely approachable enough for you to dive straight into it blindly. Either way, both games are fantastic games in their own right, but Guacamelee! 2 stands prouder with its chest out as a worthy sequel that should not be overlooked by anyone with a Nintendo Switch.

  • A dazzling, thrilling action-platformer with a potent cocktail of combat and platforming components, all set in one of the most appealing game worlds around. It's not a massive progression from the original, and its sheer relentlessness can prove tiresome, but Guacamelee! 2 is a real celebration of a sequel.

  • When Guacamelee 2 does so many things right, from the wonderfully tight and responsible gameplay to the downright gorgeous look and feel of the Mexiverse, it’s hard to not talk about it without gushing. But it’s earned that right, delivering a top-tier experience across the board. It captures the essence of multiple genres and blends them brilliantly within a visually stunning world that’s equally as fun to explore as it is to stare at.

  • Well, there you have it. Guacamelee! 2 is a good time, but it’s not without its faults. Speaking frankly, though, my complaints are mostly just long-winded nit-picks. If you liked the first one, you’ll like this one. It’s as simple as that. I honestly can’t think of anything that this game doesn’t do as well or better than its predecessor.

  • Any gripes I’ve mentioned about Guacamelee! 2 can’t change the fact I had colossal amounts of fun with it from start to finish. It’s not exactly groundbreaking or innovative, it’s actually more of the same, but since the same was already excellent, there’s little reason to complain. More luchas, more jokes, more references, more multiplayer options, and more exploration. Guacamelee! 2 takes the expression “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” to heart in order to deliver one of the best games of 2018 so far.

  • Ultimately, Guacamelee 2 is more of the same. It’s tight, intuitive and challenging platforming with fun, weighty combat wrapped in a stylish shell of colorful art, sweet music, and a sense that it’s trying just a bit too hard to be funny most of the time. Simply put, it’s a fun and occasionally demanding Metroidvania. If you’re looking for something new or vastly shaken-up from the original, look elsewhere.

Guacamelee 2 is a fantastic title. Fans of the first title will be thrilled that there’s more Guacamelee in the world, and there’s new mechanics and challenges to play with. New players should go back and experience the first Guacamelee and enjoy that, but there’s definitely enough backstory and tutorial in Guacamelee 2 to make any player comfortable with playing.

  • All in all, Guacamelee 2 is definitely a great game -- it's colorful, funny, and so full of personality and chickens that it's sure to win anyone over. Just be ready for a challenge: brawler-inspired controls and some tricky platform-hopping mean the first few hours have a steep learning curve. If you're a newcomer to either platformers or brawlers, you might want to cut your teeth elsewhere.
