  • The frustration is only further compounded by the basic map design. You'll spend the entirety of the game in a single dungeon, and even with several of the late-game traversal options unlocked your options for exploration remain disappointingly linear.

  • I found myself blowing through Ghost Song with the enthusiasm I normally reserve for new Shantae games. There have been frustrating boss fights, sure, but that was my experience with Hollow Knight too, and it’s a similar feeling here.

  • The world you will explore is equal parts beautiful and terrifying. Ambient sounds, vivid colors, enemies that can blend into the environment, strange and gorgeous lifeforms tucked deep into the earth. The vast majority of the story is told to you simply by paying attention to context clues in various places. The rest is told via communicating with the survivors of the crash and the random sentient life you find on your adventure.

  • Ghost Song is a game that wears its inspirations on its sleeve with pride, and although it may feel a bit derivative at times, it is still able to create its own identity through a great combat system and unique worldbuilding. While the game can be brutally difficult, “explorer” mode makes the game more accessible than it would otherwise.

  • Ghost Song blends common gaming elements with strange surprises, and the end result is certainly more than the sum of its parts.

  • Ghost Song is a 2D graphical Metroidvania about a revived mechanical suit exploring a haunting alien world to help a crashed crew. The controls work well for combat and navigation, in an environmental setup that gets more enjoyable as you get more powerful.

  • Ghost Song doesn’t try to reinvent the Metroidvania genre, but neither does it clutter it up with extra mechanics for the sake of complexity. It’s approachable but challenging. What it lacks in originality is made up for by attractive art, good level design and overall, addictive fun.

  • Despite the general lack of challenge, many of the items you find greatly increase your combat potential. It’s a shame that there isn’t really anything you’d need to use these things on.

  • Overall, Ghost Song is a very enjoyable addition to the Metroidvania subgenre. It maybe lacks a little bit of originality to help it stand out from its contemporaries in a rather crowded market, but the game does provide a very enjoyable experience. With an atmosphere and story that are haunting and interesting to explore, there are plenty of reasons to delve into the dangerous world of Ghost Song.

  • Ghost Song is a masterfully crafted game, which combines all the best elements of Metroid and Souls games to create an experience that simply must be played. There are emotional moments with the characters that genuinely brought tears to my eyes, terrifying monsters that made me want to stop playing, and boss fights that pushed me to my limits.

    About the game

On the desolate moon of Lorian, a long-dormant Deadsuit awakens from slumber—armed and combat-ready, memory clear of purpose. But something new is stirring… Strike out beneath the surface in search of answers in Ghost Song, an atmospheric 2D adventure of self-discovery, ancient mysteries, and cosmic terror. Explore winding caverns lit only by bioluminescent flora, battle strange and powerful creatures, and acquire new abilities to help you unearth this alien world’s long-buried secrets. Descend deep into the darkness—only then will you learn (or is it remember?) the truth.
