- When you’re not hitting its walls, Freedom Planet is an exciting game that feels natural in both docked and portable mode. The different characters give it some flair, and the nostalgia certainly helps, too. And honestly, although SEGA has kind of found their way again with its iconic franchise, Freedom Planet often feels more like a Sonic game than many actual Sonic games did.
Kirk Hiner · Sep 03, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Despite echoing the design of early 2D Sonic games, Freedom Planet manages to create its own take on the formula that's well worth playing. For a game that emphasizes tightly-paced stage design and challenging boss fights, it's disappointing that the game's story never reaches the same heights. But if you have any vested interest in Sonic-like games or 2D action-platformers, you'd be remiss not to add this one to your queue--just make sure to play in Classic Mode.
Matt Espineli · Sep 01, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - It’s just more unfortunate that its core gameplay style is so inevitably comparable to the classic formula. A comparison that can ultimately hinder the flow that you may naturally expect from it. Either way, there’s still a decent enough fast-paced platformer to be found here, and one that fits snugly with the portable nature of the Nintendo Switch.
Darren Palma · Aug 30, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - While there are some drawbacks that held the game back a bit, such as the camera being zoomed in a little too far, and being able to casually stroll up a steep incline or loop with no momentum. Additionally, the game can be pretty difficult. With the absence of rings, your lives are tied to a health meter. Some enemies and especially bosses are fairly tough to fight so staying alive isn’t as simple as it is in a Sonic game. Still, at the end of the day, these are very minor complaints. If you want more Sonic style goodness in your life, Freedom Planet should fill the slot nicely. There is also a sequel in the works that I will definitely be keeping a closer eye on this time around.
Kevin Chapman · Aug 30, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - There is a lot to love about Freedom Planet. From the fantastically colorful 16-bit graphics, the unique cast of characters down to the varied styles of music playing in the background, Freedom Planet offers tons of replayability. Not to mention the writers did a great job with the flow of the story and being able to effectively combine serious moments with witty and humorous situations.
Thi Chao · Aug 30, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Freedom Planet may have started as a mere Sonic rip-off, but to view the game as nothing more would be an enormously reductive judgment. Despite its ho-hum story and occasional difficulty spikes, Freedom Planet manages to rise above and become more than the sum of its parts, imbuing a well-trodden gameplay style with fresh ideas and concepts.
Mitch Vogel · Aug 30, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Freedom Planet is still a great innovation on a classic formula. Any fan of platforming will be more than satisfied with the joy of speeding around the long levels and the derivative gameplay of the different characters. Those who have played this game on Wii U or other platforms will be disappointed though as there is no new content included in this release. Nevertheless, this is not a game to glance over and is nothing short of a thrill ride.
Mitchell Parton · Aug 30, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - What we end up with is a 16-bit throwback that's worth playing for the reasons that matter the most. The story isn't great and we encountered one or two glitches, but its shortcomings are nullified by excellent platforming and arcadey action. The lengthy levels are impressive, and the three playable characters all offer fun ways to get through them. If you're after a solid 2D platformer to tide you over until Sonic Mania, Freedom Planet will definitely scratch that itch.
Stephen Tailby · Mar 28, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - While Freedom Planet isn't a perfect experience, it is still a very enjoyable and easily one of the best Sonic the Hedgehog-esque games I've played in years. If you were looking for something to scratch that 16-bit Sonic itch this might be it. Just don't say I didn't warn you about the questionable story, voice acting, and late game bosses.
Jed Whitaker · Jan 03, 2016 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Small issues aside, Freedom Planet is a fun and worthwhile experience. Replay value is high due to the hectic nature of the stages (you won't see everything during your first playthrough because you'll be moving too fast) and the diverse experience of playing with different protagonists. Add in the fact that there'll be two new characters as free DLC, and there's plenty to keep you coming back for more. If you enjoy platformers but never got into Sonic games, give this one a shot – you might find yourself pleasantly surprised.
