  • Five Dates does a good job of capturing the excitement and uncertainty of going out on dates, which is exactly what it set out to do. It could do more to expand what relationship exploration looks like, but what it chooses to focus on it excels at. Like other FMV games, Five Dates feels awkward, stilted, and a little hokey at times, but all of that feels at home in a game about trying to form a deep connection with someone over a video call.

  • It’s a fun, often heartwarming journey supported by likable characters and good acting, but the way that personality and choices are handled, along with the lack of a well-structured narrative climax, keeps Five Dates from being as good as it almost is. It doesn’t have enough “game” to sell itself on player challenge or interaction, and its lack of meaningful climaxes or endings means that it doesn’t quite work as a more traditional cinematic experience.

  • There’s an endearing cheesy soap-opera charm to Five Dates that means you can’t take your eyes away from it. This certainly doesn’t mean it’s a game we recommend to everyone – but if you’re looking for a reasonably well presented dating sim you could do a lot worse, especially for its budget price.

  • I had low expectations for this game but I’m glad I got a chance to play it since I loved it. This comical entry in the genre is a welcome one and is my new standard for FMV Visual Novels. Five Dates is an extremely funny game, with unique characters created and some really stand out. The outstanding cast brings the characters to life and make it an immersive scenario.

  • We appreciate this would effectively double the amount of work required, but we have to wonder who exactly Five Dates is aimed at. As it is, the entire premise feels like a throwaway side-story shoved into a Richard Curtis rom-com to simply appease the men in the audience. It’s a fun little distraction, but ultimately not an experience that’s going to stick with you for long.

  • It’s simple, touching and heartening – and thanks to its excellent acting and low-key but on-point production, it’s a pleasure to experience. If you’re a softie at heart and love a good romance story, Five Dates will put a smile on your face.

  • We played it three times over a couple of bottles of wine, cringing together, laughing at the awkward conversations, and rolling our eyes in unison when one girl announced she was "an influencer". So if you've got a big bottle of claret and someone to play this with we'd recommend it. If you're on your own and after a romantic comedy, we'd probably go for The Wedding Singer.

  • Five Dates offers up plenty of replayability if you’re interested in seeing every possible outcome. I’ll get there eventually, but my last playthrough was so effective in giving me the interactive rom-com experience that I was hoping for, that I think I’m just going to marinate on it for a while. I don’t know if thumb-ratings are still a thing in movies, but I give Five Dates two very enthusiastic thumbs up. Way, WAY up.

  • Playing a game set during lockdown is definitely unique. Rather than focusing on some of the negative aspects of the pandemic, Wales Interactive has managed to spin this into a light-hearted rom-com. It’s a fun experience that manages to turn social distancing limitations into something positive and fun.

  • Five Dates is a charming FMV dating sim that thrusts you into the unpredictable world of online dating during the lockdown. While the choices you make don’t make too much of an impact on the agency of the main character, it’s highly entertaining just to watch all the scenes play out.

Amidst a branching, multi-directional chain of conversation topics and deep-dive questions, Vinny is faced with digital game dates, awkward scenarios and unexpected truths. Five Dates is an exploration of the unpredictable modern dating experience, which follows an average single man as he navigates the world of digital dating. Through his journey, the decisions the viewer makes for him will challenge their own conceptions of attraction and compatibility.
