- This is a weak version of an already contentious RPG, then. Players that find themselves won over by the combat system of Final Fantasy XIII and are patient enough to deal with the structural problems will eventually be rewarded for sticking around, but it never lives up to the still superior journeys of VII and VIII.
Samuel Roberts · Oct 31, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Final Fantasy XIII has its own set of problems, mainly consisting of a mediocre story and incredibly linear progression for the first forty hours, but the poor PC optimization puts it over the top. For a game released on PC in 2014, where standards are higher than ever, Final Fantasy XIII fails in every category. ...Unfortunately, these positives doesn’t redeem the RPG for all its misgivings. Final Fantasy XIII is a good game that’s unfortunately wrapped up in a shoddy PC port.
Adam Beck · Oct 13, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - There are a lot of great things going on in this game--I genuinely loved something about every aspect, from the combat to the story to the visual design. These elements just weren't brought together and exposed as well as they should have been, to do a game of this magnitude the justice it deserves. But if nothing else, the glimmers of excellence in Final Fantasy XIII have at least convinced me that Japanese RPGs, and specifically Final Fantasy itself, haven't quite gasped their last breath just yet.
Brad Shoemaker · Apr 02, 2010 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - Every now and then its fights can approach satisfying, but mostly this is a dull, dreary affair that is too busy licking its own arse to look up and notice that everybody around it has fallen asleep. Written with all the skill of a three-year-old and paced with the eagerness of a virgin in heat, Final Fantasy XIII isn't just bad by Final Fantasy standards, it's pretty damn poor for the genre itself.
Jim Sterling · Mar 16, 2010 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - With immaculate presentation and some stunning imagery and music, Final Fantasy XIII hits its stride halfway through. Once the characters grow up and band together, the plot finds its Focus, and the gameplay takes the training wheels off to let gamers make the most of the stellar combat system, it's an excellent JRPG, just one with severe pacing issues. However, the overly-linear first half and overly-dramatic early character interactions may throw some players off at first. It ends up being worth it, but it can feel like a very long 20 hours.
John Funk · Mar 16, 2010 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Overall, Final Fantasy XIII is a high-quality RPG experience that is like no other. Square Enix has gone in a bold new direction with this latest installment and has delivered something that feels like nothing else on the market. Many traditional Final Fantasy themes such as summons and chocobos are all here, and while the linearity and lack of variety is disappointing, the presentation is simply spectacular.
Jonathan Leack · Mar 15, 2010 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Final Fantasy XIII is an amazing game. With an engrossing story and a thrilling new battle system, this is one title you can't afford to miss as an RPG fan. However, though it succeeds on the most important fronts, there are some notable areas where the game could have been better. The linear level design is a fairly large stumbling block, and if you are used to open-world games, it can make the entire experience feel a little claustrophobic.
Amanda L. Kondolojy · Mar 09, 2010 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - You have to hand it to Square Enix for trying to move things forward - better that than yet another rehash of the tried and tested Final Fantasy formula (the less said about Infinite Undiscovery the better). But it does so along a path so narrow and straight that you long for the days of old. When Vanille is knocked out in battle, she sometimes says: "What went wrong?" It's a question we find ourselves wondering as well.
Wesley Yin-Poole · Mar 05, 2010 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - A good story is of paramount importance in a role-playing game, but the fact that FF XIII’s other elements compensate for its disappointing narrative is a testament to the overall quality of the experience. For years, gamers have had visions of this title as an industry-transforming epiphany, but no game could possibly live up to such astronomical expectations.
Joe Juba · Mar 05, 2010 Reviewed on PS3, X360 - There are some elements that keep Final Fantasy XIII from being everything it could have been. Even so, it is still a legitimately great game for its eye-catching art, fantastic story, and enjoyable battles, which means it has a lot in common with the Final Fantasy games that came before it. The stubborn gal in the blue sari, the steely blue-eyed star, and even the apprehensive, spiky-haired adolescent are easy to root for, and their journey is as memorable as any other in the series. Even if the gameplay doesn't reach those same heights, almost any RPG lover can still get lost in Final Fantasy XIII.
