- The room search function was also quite limited, as I couldn’t even search with the parameter of something simple like “has not started mission yet”. Despite these flaws, Final Fantasy Explorers offers a good time with friends taking on iconic enemies from the FF universe- just don’t expect much of a challenge.
Jae Lee · Feb 04, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Final Fantasy Explorers ultimately strips the complex portions of its genre counterparts into a barebones action title with Final Fantasy-esque elements. Explorers is not a terrible game by any means. What you get with Explorers is a game that can help you waste time as you wait for your next anticipated game or something to play in short bursts while you’re on the go but it’s not an experience worth partaking in, even if you’re a fan of both genres.
Simon Chun · Feb 04, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - The usage of the classic style job system, along with the very enjoyable Eidolon boss battles, can provide near countless hours of gameplay, although the quests can get a little tedious after awhile. Final Fantasy Explorers may not be the best spin-off that the series has received, but it still might be worth a look for those who are fans of both Monster Hunter and Final Fantasy.
Dean James · Feb 02, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Square Enix has crafted a game that unabashedly caters to the Final Fantasy faithful and provides some wonderful opportunities for customization and collaboration, but experimenting with abilities and grinding for new weapons and armor can only keep you entertained for so long when the beasts you’re battling aren’t putting up a fight.
Dermot Creegan · Jan 31, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Final Fantasy Explorers does end up showcasing some good ideas, but their execution leaves a lot to be desired. Slowdown, a lack of general polish, and a disturbing lack of communication options means that unless you have three friends you’ll be able to play the game with regularly, it’ll end up being a hard sell. It’s a shame too, since when you’ve got a group together that really know what they’re doing and can properly communicate, the game is a nice pick-up-and-play title that might scratch that MMO party management itch.
James Galizio · Jan 27, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Final Fantasy Explorers failed at what it set out to do, which is something I’ve admittedly tolerated from other games in the series. Final Fantasy XIII’s clunky combat system, for example, made for an unpleasant playthrough, but at least it was attempting to impress. Explorers falls short because it’s afraid to step outside of its own simple trappings and is an exceedingly average game as a result.
Spencer Campbell · Jan 27, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - The focus on cooperative multiplayer is just one of many ways in which this isn't a regular Final Fantasy game at all. It's Final Fantasy because of the character designs, the skills and the classes; the gameplay, however, is something different than the series has ever done. Likewise, there's a mountain of grinding and repetition that you must be comfortable scaling if you ever hope to enjoy the game.
Philip Kollar · Jan 26, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Final Fantasy Explorers has a litany of pacing issues, particularly when it comes to its quests and, visually, it feels like a DS-era game at times. But players who are willing to jump in with both feet will find a lot to love, and that goes double if you're planning to play through the adventure with a friend.
Chris Carter · Jan 26, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - It certainly succeeds in providing a forum for building personalized heroes to show off in cooperative missions, and has enough content to supply hundreds of hours to those interested. It doesn't, however, have the strategic girth, the environmental depth and detail, nor the quirky and engaging story and characters that Capcom has perfected with its series.
Sean Engemann · Jan 26, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Final Fantasy Explorers was a smooth and accessible introduction to this game type, and has customization options galore, but if it intends to be a long-term dungeon crawling adventure, it needed more to explore.
