  • So now that I’ve basically played them back-to-back, is Far Cry 3 Classic Edition better than Far Cry 5? Gameplay wise, no. The third game in the series still holds up and it’s honestly a lot of fun. Still, nearly everything (with the odd exception of the leveling system) is done much better in 5. When it comes to the story? 3 simply blows 5 out of the water. Ubisoft’s weird tale of insanity, self-discovery, and drugs is still one of their best. It’s totally worth playing again today, especially if you’ve never done so before. Just be ready to relearn some old tricks.

  • This is a very straightforward port of Far Cry 3, a game loved and loathed in equal measure. The Classic Edition is a great way for newcomers to experience one of the best games in the series, despite some clunky controls. Many people will have made up their mind about Jason's journey years ago, but on its own merit, this is a competent re-release of a fun, if a little dated, open world shooter.

  • The open-ended, unstated and emergent elements of Far Cry 3 make it a unique shooter among this year's campaigns, while formalized character and equipment progression provide a directed thrust to your exotic antics. It has excellent, explicit design layered on top of system-based chaos – which is a fancy way of saying that just about everything in Far Cry 3 feels like a reward.

  • Ultimately, Far Cry 3 left me a little conflicted. It's a smartly designed open-world game with a ton of stuff to do, and the random acts of hilarity that occur out in the jungle will constantly leave you with unique stories you'll be desperate to tell your friends. If the story had made good on the strength of its initial premise, Far Cry 3 would have been shoo-in for best game of the year.

  • Far Cry 3 improves and expands on everything the series has offered so far. The sprawling open world, drop dead gorgeous environment, and freedom of moment to moment choice make for an experience everyone has to try at least once. It can grow harder and harder to justify the praise heaped on mega franchises like these, but Ubisoft makes it easy by fixing what’s broken and building out what’s already amazing.

  • The multi-dimensional and unpredictable nature of this jungle journey makes each and every mission a crap shoot, and is ultimately what makes Far Cry 3 enjoyable. It’s one of the better shooters of 2012 if just for its variety in its gameplay and sandbox elements. Eventhough it doesn’t stick to the hyper-realistic nightmare that it kicks off with, it’s still a rewarding story, though we would have liked to see this original idea seen all the way through.

  • One of the things that makes Far Cry brilliant is the ambiance that Ubisoft has created. This is not a game for children, and we're reminded of this fact repeatedly. There's a semi-constant stream of profanity, the violence is not toned down, and the game itself contains a nude scene. Without these things, it would be hard to take Far Cry 3 seriously, and it deserves to be taken seriously.

  • It's hard to deny its prowess for gunplay, exploration, and graphics, with the exception of minor pop-up issues and framerate drops. As long as you don't take the game as seriously as the game does, you'll be entertained. Just make sure you dismiss that Skyrim quote... as much as dragon-slaying would be just as awesome on Rook Island.

  • It's worth noting that some of the side missions feel extremely disconnected from the overall campaign, but I like to view that as something to do after the story is over. Outside those elements, players are rewarded in Far Cry 3 by an extremely connected experience. This is one of the most successful games and one that should be on the top of your must buy list. If you can deal with the insanity of the story, you will be rewarded with an absolutely brilliant experience where attention is paid to every inch of the setting, story, characters, and gameplay.

  • Far Cry 3 delivers a delightfully compelling narrative in a beautiful open world environment. The single-player is captivating from start to finish, and while the multiplayer lacks inspiration, it offers a decent distraction if you're looking for some fun in the sun with friends.
