  • Despite being advertised as a cinematic platformer, Exile's End is really a Metroidvania-style outing. It contains great graphics and sound, and does a fine job of allowing the player to explore and become more powerful without holding their hand. However, the game suffers from a tedious opening sequence, occasional camera and combat control stumbles, and a lackluster map.

  • But it’s also true that Exile’s End is not great. It’s just mediocre and it’s not optimized for the Wii U. While I got a kick out it, I suspect many of you will become bored or frustrated. Even I started leaning on online maps to find everything (breakable walls are rarely differentiated). It’s one of those games I’m torn on recommending. Watch some videos. Your mileage may vary.

  • Exile's End is a decent, if forgettable, game. It's the kind of game most people will spend an afternoon or two on and then eventually forget about. If you're craving a retro-style action game it might be worth giving this a try, but otherwise there just isn't anything here that hasn't been done before, and better.

  • If you miss playing things like the original Metroid and the like, then this is a game for you. With a mere 126 MB download, it won’t even take a huge chunk out of your hard drive. If you just want to play a game that brings you nostalgia, you want to know what it was like to play a game 30 years ago or you just want to show your kids how good they have it – Exile’s End has faithfully recreated that. Just know that’s what you’re getting into if you decide to.

  • This game does show signs of promise for the future, and that with more polish and refinements to the formula, we could have a much better game to succeed Exile's End. As is, it's a decent-enough experience that can be really rough around the edges. Only the hardcore metroidvania fans who are starved for games in the genre will find much here.

  • Exile’s End is a good action-platformer that checks all the boxes of a good Metroidvania, but does so without much pizazz. It’s a fairly short experience that is fine and does a nice job in evoking a horror vibe, but due to some poor design choices, it doesn’t reach the greater heights of its predecessors. That being said, even with its faults, to those wanting a good Metroid experience, this will suffice for now.

  • Exile’s End may not push the envelope very far beyond what the Metroidvania crowd is used to, but in many ways, it isn’t asking them to expect that. It’s a bare bones exercise in almost every mechanic and feature that keeps fans coming back to those franchises, though it retains a few antiquated ones as well. For the asking price ($9.99), L-735’s world is worth checking out.

  • For everything Exile’s End gets right about why adventure games from 25 years ago were great, however, it includes all the blemishes exactly as they were. Even though the target audience of this title are people who are nostalgic for the early 90s but want a new game from that era, there is enough good about Exile’s End that make it enjoyable beyond just that niche group of gamers.

  • Though the rough spots spoil a seamless progression, Exile's End is a challenging yet brief Metroid-styled experience at a fine price.

  • Exile’s End is not a bad game by any means, but it never really reaches the heady heights of its influences. In what is so obviously a labour of love, this is a shame, but such is the risk with such blatant nostalgia. Often, going back is not a good idea.
