  • The first Dead Island was absolutely ridiculous and quite flawed in my opinion, but because I can feel the love that went into the game and thus the care, it's a blast to play in some areas because the developers cared if I had fun. Unlike its predecessors, Escape Dead Island feels devoid of heart or identity. It is a cruel reminder of the shovelware that plagued the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and the Wii and behind its generic facade hides a malnourished newborn of a game starved for nutrition and attention.

  • Escape Dead Island disappoints on multiple levels, from its lackluster gameplay, to its awful storytelling. The revelations found in this game are not profound enough to justify the long slog, filled annoying characters and lousy stealth and combat systems. Not to mention the ending is insultingly stupid and lazy. The best way to escape this island is to never visit it.

  • There isn't much reason to play Escape Dead Island. The narrative has a few standout moments and you'll occasionally meet an enemy that will throw you for a loop. Those moments are, unfortunately, needles in a haystack of monotonous gameplay that's ultimately boring.

  • To put it simply Escape Dead Island is a cash grab using the Dead Island name, before the franchise completely moves to the new consoles with Dead Island 2. There’s nothing really satisfying about Escape Dead Island, even if you are a huge fan of zombies or Dead Island. ...With all those options available there is no reason for Escape to exist, but it does. That isn’t enough of an excuse to buy it.

  • There are lots of times when Escape Dead Island shows potential, whether its story or some of the level design towards the conclusion, but it feels as though not enough thought and time was put into making sure there was an enjoyable, or even fully-functioning game holding it all up. Escape Dead Island was almost a good experience, there was just six hours of terrible gameplay holding it back.

  • Escape Dead Island should be avoided at all costs. The moment to moment gameplay is intolerable as you have to endure dull combat, an insulting lead character, and redundant backtracking through ugly environments. Pile on the game-stopping technical nightmares, and it all amounts to being one of the worst games of the year. It's not worth digging through corpses to salvage it.

  • Escape Dead Island completely ignores what makes a Dead Island game fun: there’s no sense of dread and the highly enjoyable crafting system is nowhere to be seen. Hell, there’s not even a co-op option. What we do have is a boring linear experience with one-dimensional characters and rickety combat.

  • Escape Dead Island never manages to create anything impressive, with very little in terms of redeeming qualities. It tries to stand out from the other installments in several ways by taking on a new direction, but it ends up providing a frustrating and bland experience that is easy to recommend skipping.

  • It’s certainly not the worst game I have ever played, but it’s bland and generic and feels rushed and unfocused. It’s obvious that Deep Silver’s efforts are all going into Dead Island 2 right now, and that this game got only a portion of the attention. You might want to keep up with all the Dead Island games, and if so pick this one up I guess, but outside of being yet another title with the words “Dead Island” in the title, I can’t honestly recommend it.

  • As an origin tale, Escape Dead Island is hampered by an issue common to the zombie genre: the appeal of the narrative focusing on the characters' day-to-day survival, combined with little attention being given to finding a remedy to stop the outbreak. ...There was enough exposition by game's end and whatever mysteries were left unsolved left me feeling indifferent.

About the game

Escape Dead Island is a Survival-Mystery game set on the enigmatic island of Narapela after the events of the zombie outbreak of the original Dead Island. The story lets players unravel the origins of the zombie virus through the eyes of the would-be documentary journalist Cliff Calo. There are no superpowers to keep Cliff alive, just a few makeshift weapons against hordes of infected zombies. It will be integral to choosing wisely between stealth and combat at certain moments in the game.
