- The strong soundtrack, solid controls, and serious challenge are all elements that will appeal to fans of the genre. I can’t say that it’s necessarily meant for newer or more casual players, but it is quite fair and aesthetically pleasing, too. The adult-themed sound effects and on-screen timer are both misses, but fortunately you can toggle them off and should do so if you pick up the game. It would have been nice to see a little more variety in terms of the abilities you can use, but the stages are still fun and quite varied themselves, and online leaderboards and achievements add some great replay value, too.
Jordan Rudek · Nov 27, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Packing in all the DLC content, Electronic Super Joy has a ton to offer gamers who don’t shy away from challenging platformers. Boasting a loud and fast-paced soundtrack, dizzying visuals, and fine-tuned gameplay, this title still stands tall four years on.
Richard Atkinson · Nov 25, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - It's not ground-breaking or genre-defining, but Electronic Super Joy masters the retro-style platformer. It's stunning visually and sonically, and the presentation is tied in directly to the arresting gameplay that's complemented perfectly by tight controls and super smart level design.
Lex Firth · Jun 28, 2017 Reviewed on Wii URead full review - Electronic Super Joy is a delight. Its simple visuals are elevated by a soundtrack so perfectly in tune with the experience that it turns a punishingly difficult platformer into a trance-like experience and will soothe the pain of your multiple deaths. It will defeat you over and over again, but manages never to feel unfair or to set goals that are unachievable.
Josephine Lawton · Feb 15, 2016 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Electronic Super Joy isn't a game for everyone, far from it. It's extremely difficult, prompting this reviewer to swear more than in recent memory and battle with the urge to fling the controller across the room in a rage. Yet it's brilliant and addictive, with a unique blend of visual trickery and clever design - along with a pumping soundtrack - to keep us coming back.
Thomas Whitehead · Nov 04, 2015 Reviewed on Wii URead full review - Electronic Super Joy is a great game. It’s got an excellent, vivid art style that is quite appealing (even if it occasionally leads to confusion or seizures). It has an exceptional soundtrack. And the gameplay is rock solid, with liberal checkpoints and great level design. It is not for those who want a breezier experience from their platformer, but for those up to the task, Electronic Super Joy is a must have.
Jonathan Harrington · Nov 16, 2015 Reviewed on Wii U - Electronic Super Joy is a blood-pumping, adrenaline-rushing, mind-bending rollercoaster of a ride! Each level is the equivalent to a streetcar drag race; it’s fast and intense, but the ride is usually over in under a minute and proceeds in a straight line. With Electronic Super Joy 2 seeming to pack a lot more variety, let’s hope we see a Switch port of the sequel sooner rather than later.
