- Eastward pays a lot of homage, but those loving references feel like just that. One exception is the game-within-a-game you can play throughout the story, Earth Born. It’s a roguelike RPG in the vein of Dragon Quest that narratively mirrors the main story, and it’s extremely good. I might make a new save file just to play more Earth Born.
Eric Van Allen · Oct 09, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - As a tribute to RPGs of the '90s, Eastward is wonderful, with an atmosphere to be savoured. However, while the central mystery is captivating, it doesn’t quite nail bringing all of the different threads together, leaving a few plot holes open at the end. It also struggles to keep up the momentum and characters sometimes feel overwritten.
Daniella Lucas · Oct 06, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - There is primarily great content in Eastward for its low price, and it serves to scratch a lot of itches with its varied inspirations. It’s not without stumbles, but it is an easy recommendation for fans of not just Earthbound, Zelda, or Mario & Luigi, but RPGs in general. Pick it up, have a blast, maybe shed some tears, and spread the word: Eastward is something special.
Izzy Parsons · Oct 02, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Eastward is for people who want to bring back their gaming nostalgia in the 80s and 90s era. At the same time, this game also captures an audience who prefer this kind of great storytelling without choking your machine’s specs.
Alec Padua · Oct 01, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Eastward is a spectacular adventure well worth the wait. Hell, my complaints are all subjective, so they, to most, won’t even apply. That’s a testament to how mechanically sound it is. I enjoyed every second of it, and while I would’ve liked for the slot mini-game to be tweaked, the battle system made grinding more than bearable. There’s also a way to get ample amounts of currency that aims to cushion that grind further.
FerniWrites · Sep 29, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Eastward will fulfill any action-adventure needs that have been missing in your life. The character writing is fantastic and enhances the more emotional moments as the killer Miasma rears its ugly head. This game is an investment, but you’ll be left with a genuinely standout gaming experience full of action, exploration, memorable characters, and a fantastic final chapter. So do yourself a favor and play Eastward.
Azario Lopez · Sep 20, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - A delightful journey from beginning to end, Eastward has charming characters and beautifully animated vistas to explore. The story is nicely plotted and the chapters tell self-contained stories that are darkly amusing, if a bit overwritten. The simple combat, relaxed puzzles, and cute minigames keep gameplay variety high and the pace upbeat enough to carry you through to the end of the story.
Jon Bolding · Sep 17, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Simultaneously a throwback and a breath of something new, Eastward is a magic trick of blending familiarity with novelty and grim apocalyptic sci-fi with wide-eyed fantasy. In the future, if there’s any justice, we’ll be referring to similarly spirited and stylish games as “Eastward-like.”
Ryan Stevens · Sep 17, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Eastward proves itself to be a memorable and enjoyable mashup of many beloved classic titles, combining each of their elements together to forge something that feels distinct and engaging. Creative gameplay sequences, a heartwarming and emotional story, and a killer art style all combine to make this one easy to recommend.
Mitch Vogel · Sep 17, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The extra heart of Eastward is the evident devotion of Pixpil. From the pacing that rarely hangs around in one place to the balance of offbeat video game tropes and serious drama, Eastward is a beautifully realized experience. The graphics, the games, and even the cooking system are dam near perfect, not because they are deep and complex but because they are, like Eastward, as small and perfect as Sam.
