  • The combat is refined and easy to get into, and the amount of things to do and stuff to unlock will keep players coming back. Dynasty Warriors 8 has its drawbacks graphically. Some actual characterization would be nice to see. Dynasty Warriors 8 may not be the type of game a player will solely devote time. Instead, it’s best to accomplish a goal and come back in-between other games to savor some of that sweet replay value Dynasty Warriors 8 offers.

  • At the end of the day though this is a Dynasty Warriors game, and it still uses the same set-in-stone formula that has made it so divisive since the second game in the franchise. You still run around a battlefield slaying thousands of enemies at a time with very little strategy and in a mindless haze of glee and ecstasy. Those are what beat’em up, hack and slash games are about. Fans of the series will automatically love it, and haters will automatically hate it.

  • Dynasty Warriors 8 isn't a bad game--it just feels like a ridiculously deep well of merely average content. Outside of new modes, weapons, and characters, DW8 feels like an incremental step forward from the PS2 era, despite more than a decade of iteration since the series seemingly hit its peak. If you're a hardcore Dynasty Warriors fan, DW8 gives you more of the same, and will therefore satisfy your insatiable Three Kingdoms cravings.

  • Dynasty Warriors 8 is a shockingly great game that offers an incredible amount of value in bringing a dramatized piece of history to the masses in very creative ways. While gameplay hasn’t deviated too much, the vast cast of unique characters will help make you forget how repetitive combat can be. Capitalizing on Omega Force’s strengths with a massive campaign that’s complemented with an Ambition Mode and online play, the eighth iteration offers seemingly endless hours of enjoyment in one of the best Dynasty Warriors game we’ve played.

Dynasty Warriors 8 is the most satisfying and complete Warriors game yet, dethroning the excellent Warriors Orochi 3. It’s at once familiar and fresh, instantly recognisable at its core yet subtly transformed by intelligent additions and a series of small but noticeable tweaks. Wider changes may come in future instalments, but if this is the last we see of Dynasty Warriors in its current form, then it’s a hell of a way to bow out.

  • Dynasty Warriors 8 feels, in several ways, like an answer to criticisms fans have had of the series all generation. It contains more involved combat as opposed to Dynasty Warriors 6, over seventy totally unique character moves as opposed to Dynasty Warriors 7, and an overall deeper, more varied, faster paced experience than the series has ever had. The dramatic new additions to combat and three gameplay modes are all complimentary, while the more subtle enhancements alter the game's flow in unsung ways.

  • Dynasty Warriors 8 attempts to change the series’ long-standing formula with the addition of the Ambition mode and history-altering storylines. Combat is tedious, however, and it still defines the majority of the experience. You can find a certain level of joy from swinging your sword to take out 50 enemies at a time, but it’s a short-lived due to repetition.

  • The fact that the missions are broken down into smaller chunks and objectives means that there's some form of choice, and there's always another level to play should you get stuck. There's also the inherent appeal of crafting your own base - and as such filling it with people and shops - with the spoils, which nicely incentivises all the war-facing you're going to have to do to get them.

  • Dynasty Warriors 8 is a simple, solid title that does the Dynasty Warriors franchise proud. It’s not really reinventing the wheel, nor is it trying to cater to fans outside of its small demographic. It just wants to be the best button-mashy, Chinese-soldier murder simulator it can be, and in that, it succeeds. If you are a fan of the Dynasty Warriors franchise, definitely consider picking Dynasty Warriors 8 up.

  • Against all odds, KOEI has proven that even the smallest of adjustments are still enough to maintain interest in its hack and slash series. Hardcore fans and completionists will have an absolute field day with plenty of enjoyment to be had by non-regulars and newcomers alike.
