  • While Dungeon Hunter 4 is a game with great gameplay, it is held back by being pay-to-win (easily). The game is very enjoyable, to a point, due to the fact that you must either backtrack to become stronger through grinding out more exp and currency, or purchase overpowered weapons to be able to move on. That said, if you’re willing to either grind it out or pay a small amount of money, the game is definitely worth your time.

  • Getting back to what the series did right in the first two games was definitely the right move. Despite the multiplayer missteps, Dungeon Hunter 4 is a fun way to let off some steam by slashing or blasting your way through a horde of enemies. And as we all know, it’s not like the fantasy worlds out there are going to be running out of dungeons any time soon.

Fighting your way through Dungeon Hunter 4’s gorgeous world can be fun—especially with friends—but the obvious paywall and inelegant in-app purchases stall this adventure well before it has a chance to impress. You essentially pay to for the opportunity to reach the next point where you will again need to fork over cash to proceed. In this free-to-play fantasy, you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

  • Dungeon Hunter 4 isn’t unplayable by any means, but the ceaseless grabbing for in-app purchases is aggravating, and even a bit stressful. If you dive in forewarned, you may still be able to enjoy yourself. You have little to lose; it’s a free download, after all. Gameloft sacrificed much of the game’s potential to make it so.

  • Aside from a few minor gripes, Dungeon Hunter 4 is a spectacular dungeon crawler. It’s gorgeous, well written, funny, full of loot, and doesn’t overtly punish players for not spending their money. I just wish half the features didn’t stop working without an internet connection.

  • It's a real shame, because Dungeon Hunter 4 is mechanically the best of the series to date. It's good-looking, great to play, and it even has the option to play with or against other players. There's undoubtedly fun to be had here.
