  • This will not be a full replacement for anyone who wants a Monster Hunter experience, but Dragon’s Dogma definitely has what it takes to become a deep, highly-sought IP. Its difficulty matches that of Dark Souls and its immersive world mimics that of Skyrim, but the drawbacks are vicious and taxing. Having a full group of characters created by fellow players of Dragon’s Dogma feels really unique, since no single group can easily be mimicked, but it doesn’t help that the consequences of navigating an entire world can be wiped away because of one simple mistake.

  • Dragon’s Dogma is like a precociously intelligent teenager, in the sense that it has ideas beyond those of its peers, but struggles to explain itself. There’s no better example than the game’s rushed opening, which drops you into the armored boots of a warrior about to face a giant chimera. Then suddenly you’re at a character creation screen, wondering what happened to that other warrior.

  • Dragon’s Dogma feels like the start of something big. It thrills and frustrates in equal measure, and whilst it’s not up to the level of those at the top of this genre, one can’t help but wonder what a Dragon’s Dogma 2 could be like if Capcom act on all the lessons learned from this game. An exciting thought indeed.

  • I would have appreciated the open world of Dragon's Dogma a lot more if the color palette didn't just go from dirt brown and spring green to sandy brown, burnt sienna, and bile yellow. There's a fast travel option, but because it's tied to a rare consumable item, you'll spend a lot of time traversing the bland landscape just to get anywhere. I understood that the visual style leaned more towards realism than the fantastic, but the colors were too washed-out and uninteresting.

  • The second truly characterful RPG to hit in recent weeks, Dragon’s Dogma doesn’t quite match up to the grim, Eastern European splendour of The Witcher 2. It does, however, provide an adventure quite unlike anything you’ve played before, with an approach to team-based action combat that is as entertaining as it is rewarding. Recommended.

  • Dragon's Dogma takes chances, and it's that riskiness that makes this role-playing game so unique among its peers. Of course, some of those risks will have you groaning. Dragon's Dogma is many things: a flawed classic, an exciting disaster, a triumphant mess. One thing it isn't is a generic rehash. Dragon's Dogma will remain with you, frustrations and victories alike, when your memories of other games have long since faded.

  • Dragon’s Dogma is not a perfect game by any means. It has some pretty obvious flaws, and some mechanics may be a turn off to certain gamers. That being said, with its creative ideas, and in spite of its problems, Dragon’s Dogma manages to serve up a great fantasy RPG gaming experience that most fans of the genre should enjoy.

  • There’s so much to like about what Capcom gets right with Dragon’s Dogma that it makes the missteps utterly heartbreaking. The combat has enough depth and variety to keep you interested for the duration of the story and beyond, but in terms of what might have been, what should have been, Dragon’s Dogma falls gut-wrenchingly short.

  • The world is one of the first I've seen that truly implores you to give it the proper respect rather than brashly dive into the unknown and expect to emerge unblemished. The story and characters may not drive you to a sublime world of fiction, but the action more than makes up for it, with character and equipment customization that will keep you tweaking and enjoying yourself the entire time.

  • The gameplay is great and the unique Pawn system makes you feel like you’re playing with others even though it’s a single player experience. The world of Gransys is massive and will keep you busy for many, many hours. If you’re looking for an experience that will last you quite a while and don’t need a compelling story to keep you coming back for more, then Dragon’s Dogma is right up your alley.
