  • Despite being the somewhat weakest version of Doom I’ve played so far, Doom VFR is still lots of fun. Insane amounts of fun. Being able to blast through the hordes of hell in a virtual reality environment is incredibly enjoyable, even though the best control method is the least immersive one. Despite feeling like a tech demo at times, the game did set up what can possibly be a vastly superior sequel, should Bethesda ever bother to release one. Please do.

  • DOOM VFR looks like DOOM, and often feels like DOOM. Unfortunately, it is severely hampered by its controls. Though we haven’t played the game on the HTC Vive, it seems like the title would be much better suited for the Vive’s controllers since each of the PlayStation controllers have glaring compromises. If you’re okay with the compromises and are willing to potentially get a little sick, the demons of Hell have never been more real.

  • If you wanted Doom in VR then Doom VFR does a perfectly acceptable job of providing that. That said, it’s not quite as good as it could have been. Don’t get me wrong, I still had a pretty fun time Telefragging demons in firefights. I just felt like more could have been done, especially with removing the hub world and fixing up the control options.

  • If you have the option, it’s definitely best to play Doom VFR on PSVR with the VR Aim Controller. The game’s visuals look equally bad on Vive and PSVR so you’re not really sacrificing anything except for load times, which are faster on Vive, and the VR Aim Controller is much more elegant than either the Vive or PlayStation Move controllers.

  • Doom VFR is a fantastic translation of the Doom series to virtual reality. Yes, it’s a bit on the short side — I finished in about three hours — but the fun of leaping around arenas pursued by horrific demons makes it worth revisiting. If this game had told a compelling story, it would rank pretty high on my list of the best games of 2017, but the lackluster tale left me feeling let down. Still, if you know what you’re in for, it’s a bloody good time.

I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed my time with Doom VFR. Skyrim VR had soured me a little and I wasn’t really looking forward to playing. But this shows that rethinking how a game will work in VR, instead of just shoehorning a game into VR wholesale, can make the world of difference. It also helps that the game has a price tag to match.

  • DOOM VFR is Bethesda’s second major VR release, but it feels like one that is coming a year too late. Poor controls and odd design decisions detract from what would otherwise be an excellent VR shooter. But those who loved the 2016 release and want more in VR will find something to love here. And with a few changes, this could become a top tier VR title.

  • And it’s all over so soon, just as Doom VFR threatens to gnash its way into your heart. It’s so absorbing, despite its flaws, that once its three hours of gameplay are over, you’re left wanting more. I’ve played more than enough “brisk” virtual reality games and had hoped that Doom VFR would be different, but it was just as anticlimactic as so many others.

  • It’s hard to reconcile the great game that is Doom VFR with the clumsy Move controls that are hardly player friendly. If you have an Aim controller, that’s the best way to play, but I would have liked for the Moves to have been a viable option. Doom VFR highlights that allowing for player customization of control and comfort is imperative to making VR games accessible and more mainstream.

  • Much of your time in the game is spent wandering the UAC facility, waiting for the chance to unleash wrath on Hell's inner circle. When you do, it can feel great, but Doom VFR feels like a game unsure of whether that's the case. The result is a game that feels tentative about its own considerable power.
