  • Those who are fans of the original Doom games will no doubt have a blast with the game, even if the shortcomings can be aggravating at times. There are flaws, but there’s no doubt this is a fun game that captures the essence of what made those early FPS games so addictively fun. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand in the way modern shooters do.

  • As I stated earlier, DOOM 64 is the best DOOM game you’ve never played – and certainly my favorite in the series – that you now can. Do yourself the favor of picking this up and experiencing the cathartic joy of showing demons the error of their ways via the shooty end of the beauty that is the double-barreled shotgun.

  • It’s dated, sure, but for £3.99/$4.99 you can’t really go wrong with DOOM 64. There’s just under 10 hours of solid gameplay here, and many might return to tackle the game’s harder difficulty levels. It won’t get your heart racing in the same way that more modern DOOM titles do, but if you have a penchant for retro shooters there’s plenty to like. It’s perhaps the best of the classic DOOMs, if you don’t mind that its soundtrack doesn’t have tunes that you can tap your feet to, that is.

  • One particularly unique thing about DOOM 64 lies in the soundtrack. Gone is the hard-edged metal sound. The game has a surprisingly creepy ambient score that heightens just how unnerving the game’s environments are. Sure, you may be killing a variety of demons in hell, but the music is what really sells the title’s environments. Another factor in this is the lighting, which has seemingly been touched up for the port, as the use of colour and shadow is surprisingly robust for a 20 year old title.

  • Its gameplay is refined and this port in particular cleans up its most egregious rough edge. The maps are as confusing as ever but being able to see where you’re going makes it much more tolerable. If you’re a classic Doom fan and have never played Doom 64, you owe it to yourself to pick it up. This just may be the best classic-style Doom.

  • I am so glad that, not only is Doom 64 now available on modern consoles, but it now looks and plays as better as ever before. Nightdive knocked it out of the park once again with yet another remaster that is so well-crafted that makes the original game look unplayable in comparison. We can now finally own all Doom games in one console thanks to this brand new re-release. What a time to be alive.

  • I think I would have liked DOOM 64 if I’d realized what it was when I was a kid. I can imagine myself staying up late with my friends, passing a controller back and forth, each of us glued to the TV. I can’t go back and tell that kid that he should pull DOOM 64 off the wall at his local Blockbuster and give it a chance. But I can give it the attention it deserves now, because DOOM is eternal, and those demons aren’t gonna slay themselves.

  • The lack of local multiplayer support still stings, even after all these years, but with support for motion controls on Switch – something Nightdive has already pulled off to a tee with its Turok ports – and the addition of a new DOOM Eternal-themed level, this is classic retro shooter that deserves a little more love.

  • Doom 64 on Xbox One is exactly what you have come to expect from the franchise. There’s nothing new or surprising here, but it’s another solid set of demon slaying levels nonetheless. In all honesty, as Doom II was to Doom, it feels as if it could simply be an expansion to the original game. However, as the old saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

  • Doom 64 is a relic but while first person shooters usually age faster than most other genres this is still highly enjoyable, and its balance of mindful violence and environmental puzzle-solving works very well. Unlike some retro remasters it’s also sensibly priced, at just £4, and that alone should help to get it into more people’s hands, so that everyone can rip and tear the old-fashioned way.
