  • DJ Hero is possibly the best rhythm action game I have ever played. There's not a dull track in the entire game - hardly surprising given how much superstar DJ input FreeStyleGames has enjoyed. It may still be finding its feet in the world, and it certainly has room to improve, but for a first effort it's managed to do almost everything right.

Entertaining but lacks the depth of its guitar-based brothers

  • It's a great game, but it costs as much as two great games, and though there are downloadable tracks lined up, there's no guarantee you'll be able to use the turntable in any other game. Yet despite the sizable cost, DJ Hero is an enticing purchase. It captures the thrill of spinning together hot songs to make an electrifying mix, and it's one show that fans of rhythm games will not want to miss. Just hope you can afford the cover charge.

  • Freestyle Games has pulled off an impressive trick, crafting a game that holds true to its sister franchise while at the same time putting a unique spin on both the gameplay and the music. This is a great start, and I hope that Activision follows through with robust DLC support. With so much of the classic rock catalog depleted, this genre needs to look to new and creative ways to keep the experience fresh. DJ Hero is a great first step.

  • DJ Hero is one of the most refreshing, original games we've played in quite a while. Its addictive gameplay mechanics help it transcend its music and setting, resulting in a game that everyone will enjoy. It can be a challenge at first, it's light on options, and there's a lot of headroom for it to expand, but those who see it through will be rewarded and possibly discover a new appreciation for the unsung heroes of the night life in the process.

  • It's a bit barebones, and the turntable controller feels like it could have been better in a couple of spots. But as the start of something new, DJ Hero provides a very strong foundation that things like additional downloadable content or full-fledged sequels could really build on. If you've been fiending for a rhythm game that represents a different style of music or you just like cutting and scratching, DJ Hero's a lot of fun.

Like an '80s arcade, mixmasters will be gunning for those high scores on the leaderboards. A little headroom has been left for improvement with a sequel, particularly in the head-to-head battles and the way leaderboards display scores. But DJ Hero is already the most exciting music game around and is guaranteed to get the party started. To paraphrase Run DMC: gosh darn that DJ made my day.

  • DJ Hero is the kind of rhythm game I've been wanting for a long time, and it does deliver on its gameplay potential. However, it is a mixed bag on both value and presentation, which stops it from being the complete experience I hoped for. No compelling single player or multiplayer modes is a crying shame, and some of the animation is uninspired. But stellar gameplay and unique use of hardware combine with the most innovative soundtrack in a game to create a fun game that you can pick up and play anytime.

  • In many ways DJ Hero is a triumph, offering one of the most refreshing gaming experiences of the year and one of the best soundtracks of any music game. If you're a genre fan wearying of endless guitar-based updates, this is a thrilling shot in the arm; and if you're the type of rhythm-action gamer who relishes a ferocious challenge, you can probably add another mark onto the score.
