- The Disgaea series was never a success merely because of its zany story and compelling protagonists. The bright visuals and crazy personality attract newcomers, certainly, but it’s the addictive character customization that keeps a lot of them coming back. Now that Laharl and friends have returned but are not entirely living up to their end of the bargain, it’s time for the character customization and combat to step into the spotlight, which is precisely what they do in Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness.
Jason Venter · Oct 24, 2013 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Newcomers to the franchise may want to delve back into Disgaea's archives before trying their hand at D2 in order to better acquaint themselves with the three main characters, but after a few hours eliminating demons on the battlefield, you'll soon be up to speed with all of the tactical gameplay delights that the series has to offer.
Katy Ellis · Oct 20, 2013 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Disgaea D2 is the most intuitive, inviting, and enjoyable Disgaea installment in quite some time. It might not be as feature-laden as the previous game, but the tweaks to combat and militia micromanagement make it easy to jump in and create the army of demonic demigods you've always dreamed of. If you've strayed from the Disgaea fold for a while--or you've just been waiting for Prince Laharl's triumphant return for the past 10 years--Disgaea D2 is a great return to the daily grind of netherworld life.
Heidi Kemps · Oct 10, 2013 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - All in all, I feel like this game is a solid journey through the story of Laharl after the events of the first Disgaea. And although it seems a little dated in the graphics and sound departments, the game never really made me want to stop playing. So for all its triumphs and all its faults, I say that if you are a fan of this series, you won’t be disappointed if you pick this game up and give it a go. Travis Huber · Oct 09, 2013 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - There's a lot in here to appreciate, from the updated look and story expansion to the adjustments in the Item World, but it doesn't really bring it to any new level. It takes what's been done and worked, it expands a little here and there, and while it's a direct sequel with new story elements and characters to compliment, it's just not that far ahead of its predecessor. Still, fans of the series will buy it (as well they should, it's still pretty friggin' awesome), and it's worth the cash to plunk down… unless you're still playing an earlier version, then consider borrowing it from a friend. Or continue playing your current copies.
Kevin Schaller · Oct 09, 2013 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Disgaea D2 has its own fair share of flaws, but fans of the genre, not to mention the series, will find much to enjoy when they get their hands on it. It might even draw in some fresh fans to the series as the early accessibility to newcomers offers a welcome gateway for those who may be unfamiliar with or intimidated by the genre.
Chandler Wood · Oct 07, 2013 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - As a result of its mixed messages, Disgaea D2 is in an odd spot. It's a tad easier than previous games, but it also unmistakeably requires a good amount of series knowledge to really get into it and appreciate the characters. But I do have good news -- if you want more Disgaea, this delivers. Even if you've skipped every single iteration since the first, you can jump right into D2 like nothing ever happened, and enjoy it all the same.
Chris Carter · Oct 07, 2013 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Disgaea D2 is still a great Disgaea game, but it's a very safe one. It feels like Nippon Ichi software has retreated to a safe corner to heal up for a bit before heading back out to fight. Disgaea fans will slip right into it, but they may also tire of it a bit.
Mike Williams · Oct 07, 2013 Reviewed on PS3 - It has been over a decade since we last saw Laharl, Etna, and Flonne as the main stars of the show, but now they have reunited and are back with another insanely compulsive strategy RPG in the fifth console entry into the series with Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness. While the game loses key pieces of content from Disgaea 3, the game provides plenty of fresh and superior game mechanics to keep fans coming back while also making the experience perhaps the most accessible it has ever been.
Zack Reese · Oct 05, 2013 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - A Brighter Darkness is more than passable, but it’s not my favorite. Compared to Disgaea 4’s ambition and heart, it is a letdown. Disgaea 4 took the series to new places, opening up multiplayer and community, but A Brighter Darkness doesn’t do anything as impressive. This is even more disappointing if you are a fan anticipating a reunion with beloved characters.
