- DiRT Showdown is not a broken game; it's just very slap-dash, seemingly thrown together from pieces of ideas but never made fully whole. Courses repeat over and over and the difficulty never gets too high where events become a challenge, thus leaving the player almost bored with the task of completing each event. It looks nice, but it's clearly a shell of its former self, with no real connections to the series that everyone knows past the name itself.
Ian Bonds · Jul 11, 2012 Reviewed on X360Read full review - The presentation style is much more similar to the sunshine-filled DiRT 2 than last year's DiRT 3, complete with that festival air that seems to make your telly smell of freshly-cooked hotdogs mixed with burnt rubber. That said, the game undeniably feels more compact than previous DiRT games, with no faffing about between front menu and startline, offering you a smorgasbord of race and combat events from which to choose from.
Justin Towell · Jun 29, 2012 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Toss out any notions of what you thought the Dirt series was about as Dirt Showdown is all about flash and carnage. This game is not meant to be a successor to Dirt 3 as it is a game of its own. It is over-the-top, arcadey, tons of fun and shows that you do not need weapons to make a car combat title. Do not be fooled by Showdown coming just a year after Dirt 3.
Shad Forsyth · Jun 18, 2012 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Shortcomings aside, Codemasters has delivered a very fast paced, slickly-presented arcade demolition derby that is more than capable of giving you some great entertainment value. Less than stellar car and track selection becomes lost under the awesome presentation and fun factor. Sure, this isn’t Gran Turismo, but rather a title that fills a void in a game library that has been sorely lacking, namely demolition derby.
Cuguy · Jun 16, 2012 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - There’s just a wealth of content in this latest title. From split-screen multiplayer to joyride modes, there’s plenty of things to do and see in DiRT Showdown that aren’t just rehashed content from DiRT 3. If you were thinking that DiRT Showdown is just a beefed up remake of Codemasters’ last game, you would be sadly mistaken. While it certainly bares some resemblance to the 2011 title, this multiplayer-centric offering is a completely new experience.
William Schwartz · Jun 15, 2012 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - When you're playing this game, it almost feels as if developer Codemasters wanted to take the series in an exciting new direction, but they also wanted to play it safe. The result is Showdown, a game that has great potential, but squanders it by not doing really anything that hasn't been done better in other games.
Adam Dodd · Jun 14, 2012 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Bringing a more casual racing audience into your franchise by blending arcade and simulation elements is a fine goal, but when it's done with a jackhammer instead of a scalpel, bad things happen. Dirt Showdown still contains the brilliant driving mechanics of its ancestors, but it's hampered by half-baked design decisions at every turn. Better luck next year.
RussFrushtick · May 29, 2012 Reviewed on X360Read full review - In the end, Showdown probably isn’t the sort of game you’d expect to bear the DiRT name. In an attempt to make the franchise more accessible to everyone, Codemasters has all but abandoned the focus on rally racing and technical ability. Longtime franchise fans will likely be disappointed by the departure, but there’s no denying that Showdown succeeds more often than not at what it aims to do.
Josh Harmon · May 25, 2012 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Dirt Showdown is certainly a different type of racer, trading bumpy wheel-to-the-road driving mechanics for the dents, scrapes, and screams of vehicular mayhem. In some ways, it feels more like an expansion pack than an all-new game, but if you don't take this departure too seriously, it makes for some great summer parties online.
Game Trailers · May 24, 2012 Reviewed on PC, X360 - Showdown is an abomination, an overly simple sell-out, or a bad joke of a spin-off (though the developers have said that the upcoming DiRT 4 will be a return to form). But for fans of off-road racing games who want something more forgiving than DiRT but still somewhat rooted in reality, or someone wishing Forza Motorsport 4 had some off-road races and a demolition derby or two, Showdown is anything but a bumpy ride.
