I don't even know where to start with this. On paper, I should hate it. Turn based battles, ridiculous characters, dated, poor translation, so much against it that I was reluctant to get it.

Turns out I sunk in over 250 hours which I haven't even spent close to on my fav game of all time. Something about it is just so likeable. I couldn't tell you what but I enjoyed this game to the max. I didn't like the OST at first but then it really grew on me.

It's very hard to put in to words why I like it but one thing I can say is this blows away every Pokemon game on Switch.

Cracking game

Early in the game, the player quickly transcends the physical and digital world and through a turn of events is able to access both worlds with ease. Such a skill proves useful and the player quickly obtains employment as a sleuth that investigates cases in both the physical and digital world. Early, the player gains the use of Digimon and can battle other people that also have Digimon. Digimon themselves can also pose threats.

As I played through the main story and side-cases, I found myself impressed by the storytelling and adult humor. I wasn’t familiar with the Digimon world, but I expected a childlike world, and while the wonder of the world was somewhat juvenile, it was beautifully balanced by more mature storytelling.

In terms of the raising, Digivolving (evolving), and development of the Digimon I explored with, there was certainly a learning curve to someone new to the series, however, the curve was balanced by a smooth difficulty curve that was challenging enough to stay engaged, but easy enough to not be overwhelmed. I found myself spending just as much time tending to my team as I did playing and exploring. This may sound overly technical, but I found it extremely fun, enthralling, and rewarding as I raised my Digimon from simple, cute characters to badass and powerful heroes.

Party management was easy. The game allows for a 3 Digimon party with a load of reserves. Both the active party and the reserves gain experience from the active battles. Meanwhile, all the Digimon I had collected that I couldn’t carry with me were either training in a Digital World called a farm, where they could increase in skills and experience, or chilling in the Digibank, where they had to wait for a spot in my team or on the farm. While on the farm, the Digimon can also generate items to be used in battle, or seek out simple cases (quests) that can be taken on at a later time.

By the end of my adventure, I had logged about 80 hours. I did not complete the game as a completionist, and I easily could have spent more time doing cases and maxing out my team. If I had all the time in the world, my playthrough would have soared past one hundred hours.

The only complaint I have, is that some of the cases only involve running around and talking and no actual battles or Digimon involvement. For story-lovers, this may be a non-issue, for me it felt a bit like a waste of valuable time that I could be using to battle!

One of the best Digimon games, have plentful options of partners, but lack diversity of attacks. Said that, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition is a game focused on the story, not so much in the catch and train your digimons, so can be a little tedius after sometime.

For a truly fan of the series, it's worthy playing.

After finishing the main game, there are several "jobs" you can complete if you have not done it before the final boss. The other option after completing the main game would be to collect and digivolve all your digimon to Ultimate Level which would take some time as there are several conditions required to reach ultimate. Battle system is 3 on 3 and is similar to the Pokemon battle system. Story is also great and compelling and has an awesome soundtrack.
