  • Devotion’s tale of fractured memories and buried secrets provides a dark, compelling look into the depths of human frailty and desperation. It doesn’t quite reach the heights its developer achieved with Detention, but it’s a well-crafted first-person journey to a strange and unexpected place.

  • Devotion wraps up before it loses steam, making it a tightly packed house of horrors worth braving. It’s a shame that the game was inaccessible to players for as long as it was, but now you can enjoy one of creepiest titles in recent memory. If you can muster up the courage, you’ll be rewarded with a delightfully disturbing experience that deserves a chance to terrify a broader audience.

  • Everything Devotion does is in service of this story and its character development; you learn about these people's lives, empathize with their plight, and come to understand their actions, even if you don't agree with them. Home is where the heart is, and Devotion is a shining example of what the horror genre is capable of.

  • The gameplay is basic and the threat of death is nonexistent but learning about what happened to Feng Yu's family did offer enough interest that I played through the game twice to completely understand what transpired. Devotion will not appeal to horror fans looking for the thrill of being hunted or chased but those looking for a sinister story.

  • It’s just a shame that, thanks to the inclusion of a particular meme, the game has currently been removed from Steam. I hope that Red Candle Games weathers this storm because I’d love to see what else the company is capable of. Controversy or not, Devotion is lovely, haunting stuff.

Devotion is a fantastic psychological horror game that’s short, concise, and well-paced from start to finish. It's a tightly woven story about a Taiwanese family succumbing to mental anguish and slowly breaking down over the course of its three-hour runtime. It’s not always the most exciting game to play – specifically, when it becomes more of a scavenger hunt adventure – but the highs are extremely high and far more frequent than the occasional lows.

  • Perhaps that will ultimately raise the profile of the game though, as it certainly deserves to be played by as many people as possible. Being scary is one thing but being scary and smart moves the game into rarefied company when it comes to any medium. Whether survival horror does stage a comeback or not almost doesn’t matter now, as we’ve had two great games from both ends of the horror spectrum and to aficionados of the genre this is just as essential as Resident Evil 2.
