- If you can handle the inherent repetitiveness of most of the core gameplay, alongside some rather drab visuals, you'll enjoy this one.
PJ O’Reilly · Nov 05, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - I never played the original game and only saw the movie. While I loved the movie’s story and heart, Detective Pikachu Returns at the end of the day just felt boring to me. In my opinion the best part about the game that sees players use partner Pokémon was wildly underused and the game would have been more fun with more of those.
Terrence Johnson · Nov 02, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Detective Pikachu Returns is a heartwarming follow-up to the first game, though it does fall short in terms of depth and originality. Still, the overall experience is worth it for fans of the first game, and the movie, and for Pokémon fans in general.
Cassie Peterson · Oct 27, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - I think if you temper your expectations, Detective Pikachu Returns can be exactly what it wants to be, a delightful journey through the world of Pokemon.
Dan Lipscombe · Oct 24, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - While the spectacle of a gruff, coffee-pounding Pikachu in a deerstalker hat will never not be charming, Detective Pikachu Returns is less enjoyable than both its breakthrough predecessor and, somehow, the surprisingly decent Hollywood movie spin-off. The odd world-building is still on point, though, and younger players will doubtless find some fun in the not-so-murky corners of Ryme City, even if the intrigue is light and the detecting itself is a little rote.
Josh Wise · Oct 17, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - A surprisingly robust world, diverse mysteries, and involving plot may even draw in some parents, despite badly-dated visuals. Investigate Detective Pikachu Returns before buying, but if it seems like it’s right for you or your kids, don’t hold back – it might just hit you like a minor bolt of brilliance.
Nathan Birch · Oct 17, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Detective Pikachu Returns falls flat, feeling like a hollow experience with under-baked and sparse bolts of brilliance. Wide and mostly empty areas, a difficulty level smaller than a Cutiefly, slightly more gameplay than your standard visual novel, short run time and limited usage of its one truly unique and fun mechanic. Forgive the cliche, but most of Detective Pikachu Returns’ moves just weren’t very effective.
Reuben Mount · Oct 16, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Another special addition to the Pokémon series, the delightful Detective Pikachu Returns is worth the investment for fans of undemanding detective, adventure, and cosy games with compelling narratives.
Monique Moate · Oct 16, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Detective Pikachu 2 makes a lot of fun choices to make sure gamers know the story will differ from the movie. But different doesn’t equal interesting...Younger gamers will get a kick out of this low stakes detective story but older gamers are in for an absolute slog.
Eric Halliday · Oct 13, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Detective Pikachu Returns is a charming, if bare-bones, mystery game that deals with surprisingly heavy themes at times. However, simplistic game mechanics and formulaic mysteries mean that more grown-up Pokémon fans may find the experience frustrating at times.
