  • For the ultimate Destiny experience, yes, you will need The Dark Below. You may find more of the same content, with some palette swapped enemies and similar bounties to what we traditionally had access to, but the new content allows Destiny to continue to surprise us.

  • For the $20 price of entry, The Dark Below provides some quality skirmishes and will keep players busy for hours, if that’s how you measure value. If you can fight your way up to Crota’s End, it might even be money well spent. Things are definitely getting better in Destiny. But dropping another third of the price of the full game for more opportunities to slowly slog through dull content feels like money is changing hands in the wrong direction.

  • On a fundamental level, The Dark Below fails to justify its expensive price point for anyone who isn't a hardcore Destiny fan. While the story missions are enjoyable and the Strikes are some of the best, there just isn't enough new content here to reinvigorate Bungie's project for more than a few hours at most.

The Dark Below is a huge missed opportunity, a mish-mash of recycled ideas and content that fails to reinvigorate Destiny or address any of its biggest problems. The new raid is great, and the combat is as strong as it was before, but the new progression systems are limited and ultimately unrewarding, leaving me to wonder where Destiny will wind up if this is a sign of what’s to come.

  • You are the Destiny player the game wants, which essentially means that you are a farmer. You find out what kind of product you want, and you invest the herculean time and energy needed to obtain it and then nurture it with constant love to bring it to fruition until you decide to destroy it and plant something new in its place. This is Destiny’s circle of life, and The Dark Below does just enough to feed it, if not enough to make it thrive.

  • All in all, this expansion was well worth the wait. For fans of the game it gave us all an opportunity to recapture a little of that new feeling as we tried to regain our levels with the new gear and weapons, but at the same time it gave us a new level of challenge and difficulty in addition to the increased level cap.

  • I've gotten all the way to this point without mentioning The Dark Below's price of admission, a steep $19.99. The problem isn't just that, and I wouldn't feel much better if the cost were much lower. The Dark Below is thin on content, and it fails to expand the scope of Destiny in any meaningful way. Bungie has adopted language from the MMO genre to describe this DLC as an "expansion," but the studio doesn't establish any legitimate claim to the term.

  • Alas, The Dark Below needed more to truly sell itself to most of the fanbase. Four Strikes, not two, would have been about right. Crota's End is fun, but I feel like it was shorter than Vault of Glass, and it was a bit easier to pick up. I'm not too sure on the longevity of this raid either unless Bungie has something special up its sleeve for January's hard mode.

  • Players won’t find any sort of story resolution or character development here, and they will end up playing through the same environments, with the same objectives all over again. The Dark Below ends up feeling like a perfect distillation of everything that was already wrong with Destiny, while offering little for players to truly enjoy beyond keeping up with everyone else in the search for new and better loot.

  • Destiny split opinion when it was released in September, and although I fell firmly on the side of positive, I'm a little more on the fence when it comes to The Dark Below. It's a good expansion, and if you're still playing every night, it's worth getting. It's just an expensive proposition, and not only in terms of the money it asks you to cough up.
