Critic Reviews
- Overall, Despot’s Game is an unusual combination of genres that adds something fresh to the scene. It’s fast-paced and enjoyable in short bursts, with upgrades that help keep things interesting. The randomized runs won’t be for everyone, but they’re fun while they last, despite a lackluster control scheme.
Jemma Casson · Jun 22, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Despot’s Game offers a highly addictive semi-idle dungeon crawling experience that’s full of combinations and choices, making every run different from the last. The game has cool graphics with loads of variations for battlers, fitting sounds, and gameplay offering high replayability. The only downside we found is that one way or another, fighting other players is forced upon you.
Pimp Without The Pee · Jan 21, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Despot’s Game is a roguelite tactical auto battler where we build a small army of puny humans by recruiting and equipping them with different weapons. Our goal is to reach the end of the many randomly generated maps and face the evil robot that set up this sadistic “game”.
RandomPixel · Oct 11, 2022 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - Despot’s Game is a challenging, fun, and hilarious pixel strategy game that truly pushes you to the edge after about the hundredth time you are sent back to the beginning. Amidst the chaos of my desperate attempts to keep my team together in one piece, I may have found the perfect strategy game. While it is easy to pick up, the ever-evolving boss fights and randomly generated events ensures that you’ll spend a long time playing and have a good laugh while doing it.
Zak Wasilowski · Oct 07, 2022 Reviewed on iOS, AndRead full review - The writing is snappy, the action is fast-paced, and the character designs are terrific. I had a hard time grappling with the roguelike elements, however. There’s certain patience this sort of system demands of you, and I don’t have enough of it.
James Paley · Sep 29, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Despot’s Game: Dystopian Army Builder is a really fun if slightly flawed strategy game that I’m glad I decided to check out. While it’s not something I might recommend to most for a purchase it is definitely worth trying out on Game Pass if you are subscribed.
Jesse Norris · Sep 28, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Despot’s Game: Dystopian Army Builder is a pleasant surprise. It has a real one-more-go appeal, a hook that will drag you back in over and over again. The sheer amount of team-building options is remarkable. Every run is different as well, so the replayability is nailed on.
