- In Dawn of the Dead the spectre of mindless consumerism is decrepitly embodied by the zombie. I'd warn you in this case not to become that lumbering beast. If this had been released before Dead Rising or Left 4 Dead, or indeed any of the hundreds of zombie games released between then and now, it might still be relevant to your wallet. As it's the reanimated corpse of a previous game that already looked a little peaky, it's something that even Dead Island fans should avoid.
Cara Ellison · Jun 27, 2013 Reviewed on PCRead full review - All in all I think Dead Island: Riptide would have been more successful if it was marketed and priced for what it really is, and that’s an expansion upon the original. Even the glitches would be overlooked as they came part and parcel with the first game as well. By presenting it as a fully priced new title most are expecting something that improves upon the original and addresses the mistakes of the past.
Shawn Petraschuk · May 12, 2013 Reviewed on X360Read full review - There's no getting away from how Riptide feels like Dead Island's long lost twin, the one that should've stayed lost. The game carries the same genes and the same defects, albeit with slight differences. That these defects include bugs and such basic issues as hearing the same, poorly delivered dialogue repeated ad nauseam when you hand over quest items - try doing that for three minutes straight - is astounding.
Sinan Kubba · Apr 26, 2013 Reviewed on PC, X360 - If you liked the original, then you'll probably enjoy Dead Island: Riptide – but this feels more like a big expansion pack than a standalone sequel. Newcomers will be frustrated by the buggy gameplay, while long term fans will be baffled by the unfixed glitches. The game is at its best in co-op, but, despite some decent presentation, it's still not really worth the admission fee.
Ben Tarrant · Apr 25, 2013 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - And don't try enlisting a few friends for some four-player co-op: it doesn't make the game any more exciting. Sure, having a few friends around makes those hordes disappear a little faster, and there are some extra quests you can take on, but the core experience remains as glacial as ever. Riptide is dumb, and mind-numbingly slow, and somehow manages to make the art of zombie-slaying feel like utter tedium.
Marl Walton · Apr 25, 2013 Reviewed on X360Read full review - ...it’s pure monotony, and as either sequel or mere continuation it represents a thoroughly wasted chance to push Dead Island forward.
Edge Staff · Apr 24, 2013 Reviewed on PC, X360 - It’s this recycling — from the weapon mods to the character trees to the zombie fights to the fetch quests — that ultimately dooms Riptide to mediocrity. I enjoyed it more than its predecessor, but it’s not a better game. It’s the same game with some new ideas, but ultimately too few of them used much, much too often.
Phil Hornshaw · Apr 24, 2013 Reviewed on PC - Dead Island: Riptide is a game where enjoyment hinges entirely on personal satisfaction of repetitively killing thousands of zombies and having friends with the same passion. For these select people, Riptide can be a whole lot of fun; but for anybody going it solo or demanding more from a game than just mindless violence, however, it will prove increasingly tedious.
Steve Hannley · Apr 24, 2013 Reviewed on X360Read full review - In short, Dead Island: Riptide is a bit of a disappointment. With the relative success of the first game, Riptide was poised to do great things if it could solve the issues of Dead Island. Sadly, instead of fixing issues, Techland added new ones. Riptide does manage to pull off some fun zombie-killing action at points, but as a whole, the game fails to deliver the full experience.
Joshua Bruce · Apr 23, 2013 Reviewed onRead full review - Sure, playing online with your friends and killing zombies is fun, but a story this poorly developed and saturated with cliché characters cheapens the experience, leaving players wondering what could have been if more effort went into the product. Dead Island: Riptide once again takes advantage of the zombie genre's popularity instead of actually exploring new ways to function within it. If you loved Dead Island you'll love that Riptide gives you more of the same, but everyone else should use their brains before they turn to zombie chow.
