- The cure for the common Triple A title, Dark Souls takes every gloriously strange and punishing moment from Demon’s Souls and expands and improves upon it. While its fundamentals hew closely to the original's, Dark Souls is a completely unique experience with no direct competition on the market. For those who get it, it's undoubtedly one of the year's best.
Michael Grimm · Oct 10, 2012 Reviewed on X360Read full review - The genius of Dark Souls isn't just in its environments, or its monsters, its thrilling combat, or the unusual and exciting ways in which players are connected. It's in the uncompromising way it throws conventional wisdom to the wind, dropping you into its dangerous world without guidance, making you fend for yourself, and teaching you to shrug off defeat time and time again to finally earn victory.
Carolyn Petit · Sep 10, 2012 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Dark Souls is a fantastic game from beginning to end. Extremely difficult and challenging, it'll test your skills as a player - but is also rewarding. The expreience and the thrill of having your butt handed to you time and time again is something that is uniquely enthralling - this is a game that gives you a true feeling of accomplishment after overcoming the challenges. Dark Souls remains to this day a cohesive and compelling game that warrants a try -- even if death scares you a bit.
Simon Chun · Sep 09, 2012 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition is one of the worst PC ports I’ve played. It’s also one of the best games ever made, so don’t let a few trivial issues push you away. If you play with a 360 controller and install the resolution fix, it’s every bit the game that you might have imagined when you first heard the game was coming to PC.
Lawrence Sonntag · Sep 06, 2012 Reviewed on PC - Even with some graphical hiccups, it remains superior to the console counterparts, offering more content, better graphical options and a frame rate that is steady throughout. Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition is an experience like no other that will invoke a multitude of emotions while keeping you planted on the edge of your seat.
Adam Beck · Sep 01, 2012 Reviewed on PCRead full review - An action game that dares to teach us patience, and caution. A video game with respect for the player, that dares us to be an actual hero. Not once when you die does Dark Souls help you back up, not once does it let up in its astonishing quality or turn to padding, and not once do the ideas stop coming. Buy it.
Quintin Smith · Aug 31, 2012 Reviewed on PCRead full review - If you know the trip downstairs will be long, hard, and sometimes uncomfortable, but you want to take it anyway because you know it will reward you like nothing else – if that noise downstairs leaves you too curious to climb back into bed and cover your ears – then Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition is waiting for you at the bottom of the stairs. I suggest you go and investigate. A deep, dark, challenging and impossibly rewarding fantasy RPG, sadly given a straight and perfunctory port from console.
Rich McCormick · Aug 24, 2012 Reviewed on PCRead full review - With its high difficulty, punitive checkpoint system, and trial-and-error gameplay, Dark Souls isn't for everyone. But with the Prepare to Die Edition, PC gamers finally have a version of Dark Souls to call their own, and longtime fans of the game have some new content to work with. Graphical hiccups aside, that makes this port a success.
Robert VerBruggen · Aug 24, 2012 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Dark Souls is without question a punishing experience, but it is also equally rewarding. That feeling of isolation, fear and desperation never seems to disappear as it manages to test even your mental toughness. Dark Souls is not a game for everyone and is truly meant for those fans of ‘Demons Souls’ or for gamers looking for one hell of a difficult gaming experience. The developers were not kidding when they told you to “prepare to die”.
Trevor Houston · Oct 18, 2011 Reviewed on X360Read full review - If you know you're the kind of player that can appreciate the depth and difficulty of Dark Souls' experience, you should run out and buy it right now. Dark Souls is going to be a polarizing game, and it knows it. If you're willing to approach it and learn its ins and outs, its one of the most rewarding and enjoyable titles out right now.
