  • It sounds simple, and it is. But, like all the best games, there are layers of strategy and nuance that hook you ever deeper into the game. The creatures have either one of four elemental attributes: Fire, Water, Earth and Wind, or are neutral or a mix of several elements. So is every square on the board.

  • Culdcept Saga is an exciting card-collecting game if ever there was one. The battles are chaotic and unpredictable, letting you devise your own strategy from the bounty of unique cards. It's the inclusion of a gripping board-game mechanic that pushes Culdcept over the top, though.

  • Culdcept Saga doesn't do its best to be accessible and easy to appreciate, and that's probably its biggest downfall. But, when you get past the incredibly steep learning curve, insane match times, and sometimes cheap AI, you'll find a deep, rewarding strategy gaming experience. In the end, it's a lot of work to play and enjoy Culdcept Saga, but you'll find that those who have put in the work can't put it down.

  • While the game offers a lot depth and content, there just aren’t a whole lot of frills and the game definitely lacks mass appeal

  • Culdcept SAGA is a unique card collection board game that will appeal to more gamers than just the usual suspects. However, if you typically hate this kind of game, then Culdcept SAGA will not convert you. For the rest of you, it is a game that is full of depth, strategy, and appeal. The multiplayer features really add to the title and the prospect of downloadable content should keep us playing for a long time to come.

It's obviously trying to bring in new players by not being overly complex, but its depth is hurt because of it. Spend 40 bucks on Culdcept Saga if you're desperate for a card game but don't want to deal with the real thing (or you have no real friends) or if you've ever been interested in what these games are like, otherwise you won't want to bother.

About the game

In Culdcept Saga, individuals known as Cepters move around a game board by the roll of the dice, using magical cards to call upon creatures and cast spells to occupy each area they encounter. Using cards, players can customize different decks to assist in their struggle for territorial dominance. As they maneuver their way around the board and land on occupied properties, opponents can opt to pay a fee for their brief stay or attack the guarding creature to inhabit the zone. Players can fortify their decks and develop strategies in single player mode, then apply those tactics against up to 3 friends on Xbox Live or on a single console. Gamers can further modify the game with their own style when they alter their characters’ appearances using parts won during matches.
