  • More serious are the numerous bugs: players are often forced out of shadow form for no reason, making the platforming and puzzle-solving a chore, and Dawn frequently gets stuck on boxes, in walls, almost anything. Infuriating, and so common as to be inexcusable. As is the fact that there's only really one 'correct' solution to the puzzles, so much so that the game lessens skills or flat out removes collision so you can't outsmart it. A huge shame.

  • A description of the gameplay, the setting, and the story all seem great in theory, but my short time with Contrast left me with more disappointment than satisfaction, particularly on the gameplay side of things. A little more attention and polish, along with more difficult puzzles and a longer run time would have done this game a lot of good, but perhaps the concept can come to better fruition in a future title.

  • Contrast is so close to being a unique indie gem, that it hurts. Instead it's a flawed, but irresistible PSN title that deserves to be played. Ignore the bugs and soak up the jazz music and appealing art style, and Contrast will draw you into its world for its duration.

That says much about the game’s puzzle design. ...It may have a delightful art style, a vividly realised world and a story that builds to a sweet, satisfying conclusion, but it’s been hurried out the door to meet a hardware launch date and it shows. It’s a game of light and shade, sure, but there’s a little too much of the former seeping through the cracks.

  • I dearly wanted to enjoy Contrast. It's the kind of game that is normally right up my alley, featuring puzzles, platforming, a stylish, historically inspired world, and an intelligent young female protagonist. It simply wasn't fun to actually play. Contrast would have made a delightful short film, but I'm afraid that it isn't a particularly good game.

  • Contrast is a mess. It’s ugly, tiresome, insipid and occasionally insulting. It aspires to be like other, better games, and wears that on its sleeve, but has nothing worthwhile to call its own. The story it tells is stale and overwrought, and the gameplay itself is shallow and uninspired. It’s currently free on PS4 for PlayStation Plus users, but it’s still not worth your time. Let this one fade into the shadows.

  • A relatively short excursion into the lives of Didi and her imaginary friend is ruined by an astounding number of bugs. While Contrast is worth completing for the sake of seeing the gorgeous scenery and hearing the exceptional soundtrack, don't expect to have any real burning desire to play this game again over the coming months.

  • Contrast is best when the story and the puzzles complement each other, like the platforming sections of the Lighthouse later in the game. Though short, Contrast can be replayed to get all the collectibles and is worth a look for the way the story and gameplay integrate, even if at times it's a little rough around the edges.

  • Contrast is, quite fittingly, a game of stark separations. There are elements of real quality but those are unfortunately juxtaposed with certain areas where the game fails to quite live up to its potential. With some very interesting ideas and some genuinely clever puzzles, it’s a shame that it has moments that feel a little rushed, a narrative that doesn’t hold any real sense of surprise or intrigue and a cast of characters that it’s difficult to empathise with.

  • Contrast's real failing ends up being as a puzzler, though. While the story is enjoyable and finding the little unlockables that reveal what's going on in the background is great, the puzzles are simply too easy. I never once had to stop to think too hard about what the next step was, and the only difficult puzzles were difficult because of a hard jump once the shadows were in place for a hard platforming segment.

About the game

You play Dawn, the imaginary friend of a young girl named Didi. You have the power to slip from the 3D dreamscape into the parallel 2D shadow world bound to it. Cast light on a shadowy story by manipulating light sources in the 3D world to distort, enlarge or stretch the 2D shadow world. Manipulating and shifting between light and shadow will be the key elements that you will need to use to solve our world of shadow-based puzzles and help progress Didi's story!
