  • Conflict: Denied Ops is not going to set the world on fire, no matter how many exploding barrels there are. It will scratch that itch if you’re looking for nothing more than some mindless gunplay mixed with dangerous doses of testosterone, but there’s nothing going on upstairs. And for a tactical shooter, that’s not going to cut it.

  • Go in with low expectations and an appreciation for simple retro shooters and you won't be disappointed with Conflict: Denied Ops. It isn't a great shooter by any means, but it is a competent one for those of you who don't want a lot of interaction or thinking to interfere with senseless mayhem.

  • Conflict Denied Ops is a mess of a game in all senses of the term. Its gameplay is at least one generation behind the competition, its presentation is like a collection of every graphical effect thrown into a mixing pot and poured onto the screen and the online implementation leaves a lot to be desired. Sadly, it joins a growing list of next-gen shooters that must be avoided at all costs.

  • Conflict: Denied Ops is a lesson in imitation. The goal for any imitator is relatively simple: if you're going to copy someone or something, make sure you at least meet the pre-established bar; even better, leap over that bar and set a new one of your own. It's doubtful the developers set out to reinvent the FPS wheel, but in even the basic areas-controls, story, co-op-the experience comes off as subpar.

Do yourself a favor and ignore this game. The appeal of a co-op experience is oftentimes strong, but there is essentially no merit to Conflict: Denied Ops. It offers nothing unique and has almost no production value. Shooters are a dime a dozen these days and most have this game beat at every turn.

  • The first Conflict game on Xbox 360 is indeed a Denied Opportunity, a shooter that hasn't made a happy transition from team-of-four third-person to two-man first-person, at its best disappointingly average and at its worst like being a quipped-at golf caddy for Sly and Arnie over a full 18-holes. A good franchise spoiled

  • To be fair, Pivotal has succeeded in the aim of making Conflict more accessible with Denied Ops. Anyone who's never played a shooter before should be able to pick up the game and progress through the levels without much frustration. If you don't care about clichd characters, loose controls and repetitive set pieces, you might even have a nice time.

About the game

When the US government needs intelligence but wants no association with an operation, deniable operatives are dispatched. Responsible for covert paramilitary actions, the Special Activities Division is a division of the Central Intelligence Agency’s former Directorate of Operations, now the National Clandestine Service. Members of the unit must bear no identity; no objects, papers or clothing that could associate them in any way with their employees...
