  • Fast and thoroughly enjoyable throwback to classic side-scrolling RPGs, but too much content is hidden behind Multiplayer.

  • Code of Princess is a modern take on old fashioned arcade action with some RPG elements thrown in for good measure. The core gameplay is extremely repetitive, but the character dialog and plot development between each level helps break up the monotony. The game’s level of self awareness enhances the experience. Code of Princess is a simple lighthearted game that relies on common anime tropes, silly dialog and cartoonish humor to make it more entertaining.

  • In recent years the return of the side-scrolling fighter has mostly been signalled by remakes or re-imaginings, such as the brilliant Double Dragon Neon. But with Code of Princess, the creators have just kept to what they are comfortable with and not pushed any new ideas into the genre. One day I hope the genre can return with new ideas to reclaim gamer’s hearts, and wallets, but Code of Princess is not the game to bring the genre back.

  • There's a lot to like about Code of Princess: the characters and dialogue are amusing, the combat is fundamentally solid, and there's a lot of replayability in the various missions and side quests. Even though some design and technical hiccups prevent the game from reaching the heights of its inspiration, there's still enjoyment to be had from this goofy fantasy romp.

  • This is the rare kind of game that seamlessly blends classic brawler gameplay with RPG elements while still managing to remain simple and fun, and is one of the most appealing games we've seen on the 3DS so far.

Code of Princess is a game that I'd love to like more than I do, as it isn't often we get new designs that call back to classic, pioneering genre hybrids like Guardian Heroes. Beyond the winning localization and expert voice acting, though, playing through this adventure just felt lacking – its various unique ideas and innovations never came together to create a real sense of fun. If you haven't bought it already, feel free to skip this release.

  • A mild disappointment that matches feelings about Code of Princess as a whole. It appears to have most of the constituent parts that made Treasure's 1996 title (now available on Xbox Live Arcade) so joyous, but problems in structure and detail spoil the whole. It's a tribute act: one that initially delights through recognition, but ultimately feels hollow and counterfeit.

  • If you can’t stand hack n’ slash games, this won’t really change your mind. If you just don’t “get” anime-styled games, this will probably not make you a believer. If you don’t like handheld gaming, this will likely not be the game that makes you break out your wallet. However, if you are a fan of anime, 2D action brawlers, and portable games that cater to the more traditional gamer… give Code of Princess a try. It's a fun action game with many colorful characters from some of the most talented game makers working today.
